The short answer
An ice-making fault on an RTW refrigerator usually comes down to the plate losing contact with what it is meant to freeze, whether through frost, packing or a tray that never touches it. The order that follows puts the likeliest and cheapest causes first, and it is the order worth working in rather than starting with the part that sounds most serious.
What you actually observe
- Ice forms as a thin skin and then stops — The plate is getting there and then losing it, which points at cycling rather than at a dead compressor.
- It freezes on mains power but not from the vehicle socket — A supply difference, not an appliance difference.
- Drinks are cold but nothing in the compartment freezes — The classic split: refrigeration is working, freezing duty is not being reached.
- The whole box is warm and nothing is cold at all — NEAR MISS: that is a cooling failure, and the not-cooling page is the better read of it.
- Body: No two RTW listings share a base number, so each one in the table is a distinct machine rather than a revision of its neighbour.
What causes it on the RTW platform, in likelihood order
- 1. The set point and the operating mode — Before anything is suspected, the set point has to be low enough to freeze and the mode has to allow the compressor to reach it. Most reports of no ice end here. It ranks high on RTW because the two listings are close enough in size that usage, not capacity, decides the outcome.
- 2. The conditions it is being asked to work in — Freezing takes far more out of a small compressor than chilling does, and every degree of ambient heat takes capacity away from it. In a warm vehicle with a warm load, freezing duty is the first thing to disappear. Second here because it costs nothing to ask, while the cause above it explains more of what owners report on RTW.
- 3. Lid gasket and latch — Look for the seal fault on a unit that used to freeze and now only chills, especially one that has been carried, dropped or stored with the lid clamped shut for months.
- 4. The control module that sets compressor speed — The module decides how hard the compressor runs.
The order to work in on this platform
- 1. Read the set point and the mode on the panel — Costs nothing and settles the most common cause before any hardware is suspected.
- 2. Move it out of direct sun and away from anything warm — Ambient heat is capacity, and capacity is what freezing duty runs out of first.
- 3. Check the seal along its whole length with a sheet of paper — Drag on every side is a good seal; a slide anywhere is a leak.

Safety
Isolate first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and treat a capacitor as charged after the power is gone. Ice comes off with time and a cloth, never with a blade, because what is directly behind the frost is refrigerant tubing. There are two RTW listings, RTW20 and RTW25, and nothing below distinguishes between them unless it says so.

When to call a technician
Call when the set point, the supply, the frost and the seal are all clean and the compartment still will not freeze. That combination has run out of owner checks, and what remains is the compressor module or the sealed system.
