Noise on the NX line separates cleanly into sounds that follow the fan, sounds that follow the compressor and sounds that follow the cabinet. Half of these complaints are ordinary refrigerant sounds heard in a quiet room, and excluding them first saves a visit, and that split does most of the diagnosis. The first check on this line is the simplest one - separate ordinary sounds from the complaint - and the cause at the bottom of the list is the only one that is not owner work.
What you observe
- Runs longer than it used to and is louder for it — The sound may be unchanged and simply present for more of the day.
- A hard knock at the start of each run — One thump as the compressor picks up, then a steady hum; often another at the stop.
- A rattle that comes and goes within a run — It appears for a few seconds at a particular point and then clears on its own.
- NEAR MISS - clicking every few minutes with no run — That is a start attempt failing rather than a mechanical noise, and it points at the supply or the start circuit.
Ranked causes for these models
- Normal refrigerant and expansion sounds — First here, and by a wide margin: these sounds are also louder in a quiet room than in a kitchen, which is why the same unit is faulty in a bedroom and fine in a garage.
- Contents and baskets vibrating — Second on this line: bottles touching each other, a wire basket resting on a rail and packaging against the liner all buzz at the compressor frequency. On a small cabinet the panels act as a soundboard, so a trivial contact is loud.
- The cabinet not standing squarely — Third: stance is first because it is free to test and it explains the loudest complaints: the noise changes the moment the unit is shifted a hand-width.
- A worn fan bearing — Last on the list, and the only one here that is not owner work: it develops rather than appearing, gets worse in the cold, and is often quieter for a while after a run, which is how it is distinguished from a foul.
What to check first, second, third
- Separate ordinary sounds from the complaint — Ask whether the sound is new or newly noticed. A unit moved into a quiet room has not changed; the background has.
- Run the unit empty for a minute — Take everything out, close the door and listen. If the noise has gone, it was load, not machinery, and the fix is how the cabinet is packed.
- Press each corner in turn — Slide the unit a hand-width and listen again. A noise that changes with position is the stance or the surface, never the compressor.

Switch off at the breaker or pull the plug before any panel is disturbed, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not defeat a door switch to keep a fan running while you listen; there are safer ways to place a noise.
