Start here
An NLS unit that has become noisy is, more often than not, telling you about the room it is in. If the noise is the start itself, the question is why the unit starts so often, so the ranking here puts position and load above machinery. The order below puts knocking from short cycling first and a failing compressor last, and that order is the point of the page.
The observables
- A buzz that you can feel through the case — Felt as much as heard, and it changes if you rest a hand on a panel.
- The unit walks slightly over time — It ends up a finger further from the wall each week, which is vibration finding a path out.
- Gurgling or trickling after the compressor stops — Liquid settling in the pipework; this is an ordinary sound and not a fault on its own.
- NEAR MISS - a hum with a burning smell — Isolate it and stop. A hot electrical smell is not something to diagnose by ear.
Causes, most likely first on this line
- Knocking from short cycling — Ranked first on this line: a compressor that starts and stops every few minutes announces every one of those starts, and on a small unit the start is the loudest event in the cycle. The noise is a symptom of the cycling, not of the compressor.
- The cabinet not standing squarely — Next, and close behind: stance is first because it is free to test and it explains the loudest complaints: the noise changes the moment the unit is shifted a hand-width.
- The cabinet touching a wall or furniture — Then: it also starves the condenser of air, so the unit runs longer and makes its noise for more of the day, which is why the complaint often arrives in warm weather.
- A failing compressor — Last, and the reason the order matters: a compressor that is on the way out gets loud, but it does so alongside a cooling complaint, not on its own. A noisy unit that still holds temperature very rarely has a compressor fault.
The order to work in
- Time the starts — Time the gap between starts over half an hour. A unit starting every few minutes has a cycling problem, and the noise is the consequence.
- Press each corner in turn — Slide the unit a hand-width and listen again. A noise that changes with position is the stance or the surface, never the compressor.
- Pull the unit clear of everything it touches — Pull it a hand-width from the wall and from anything beside it, then listen. A noise that halves has been telling you about the contact, not the machine.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the machinery bay contains both the electrics and sealed pipework that should not be levered or bent.

When this stops being owner work
Call once stance, load, panels, clearance and the surface have all been excluded and the noise is still there, because what remains is inside the machinery bay. Call immediately for a burning smell, a trip, or a noise that arrived together with a warming cabinet.
