The short answer
On a portable dryer the usual electrical fault is the supply path rather than the appliance: an extension lead carrying a sustained heater load, or a general-purpose outlet shared with other appliances. Both show up as a warm plug before they show up as a trip. Removing the extension lead is the single highest-value thing an owner can do here.
What you observe
- The plug, lead or outlet is warm after a cycle — Heat at a connection, not in the dryer. It escalates with every load.
- Trips protection when heat is called for — The heater is the load; a shared circuit or a weak connection shows there first.
- Extension lead or adaptor discoloured or soft — Stop immediately. A lead that has been heated is damaged even after it cools.
- Hot smell during the cycle — At the outlet it is the connection; from the machine it is lint around the heater.
- NEAR MISS — drum turns, no heat, nothing trips — That is a thermal fuse or heater fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Extension leads and adaptors — First, and by a wide margin on a portable dryer. Light leads and multi-way adaptors are built for intermittent loads, not for a heater running for an hour, and they heat at their own connections. Most reports on this class of machine trace here and nowhere else.
- Shared or worn general-purpose outlet — Second. A portable dryer is plugged in wherever it stands, often into an outlet already carrying other appliances, and an outlet whose contacts have loosened over years heats under a sustained draw.
- Lint around the heater and small filter — Third. A compact machine has a small filter and a short lint path, so it loads fast; lint packed around the heater keeps heat where it should not be and degrades wiring over time.
- Heater element and thermal protection faults — Last. An element shorting to its housing trips protection immediately and repeatably with nothing else running, which is a quite different pattern from the intermittent trips the causes above produce.
Check in this order, and why
- Remove every extension lead and adaptor from the path — It is free, it takes seconds, and it resolves the majority of cases on this machine.
- Feel the plug and outlet right after a cycle — Warmth at the connection, with a cool cord, points away from the appliance entirely.
- Run once with nothing else on the circuit — Separates a loaded circuit from a machine fault before any panel is considered.
- Clean the filter and check the exhaust path — Last owner step, and it addresses the heat that makes every other fault worse.

- Unplug and inspect the plug, cord and outlet face — Look for discolouration, softened plastic, loose grip or a cord crushed under the machine.

Before you touch anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not run a portable dryer from an extension lead or a multi-way adaptor as a permanent arrangement, do not run it with a damaged or heat-marked plug, and never vent it into a closed room. If the lead or outlet has been hot enough to discolour, stop using that outlet until it has been checked.
When to call a technician
Call when the machine still trips plugged directly into a dedicated outlet, when the trip repeats at the same point in every cycle, or on any hot smell coming from inside the cabinet. Call an electrician rather than an appliance technician when the outlet itself is warm, scorched or loose, because moving the dryer elsewhere would simply move the symptom. A discoloured extension lead is not repairable and should be discarded rather than reused.
