The short answer
A heat-pump dryer trips far less often than an element dryer, and when it does the usual causes are the compressor start on a tired or shared outlet, or condensate that has found its way somewhere it should not be. Fluff blocking the heat exchanger causes overheating and protection stops rather than trips. The outlet and the fluff filters are owner work; the sealed circuit is not.
What you observe
- Trips protection shortly after the cycle starts — Compressor start-up is the current peak of the whole cycle.
- Machine stops early and reports a fault, nothing trips — Thermal protection responding to a blocked heat exchanger. Not an electrical fault.
- Water in the cabinet base or under the machine — A full container, a blocked condensate path or a displaced drain hose.
- Hot smell, or a plug that is warm after a cycle — Connection heating at the outlet — worse if the machine shares a socket.
- NEAR MISS — drum turns, clothes stay damp, nothing trips — That is a fluff and airflow fault, and it belongs on the drying-performance page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Compressor start current on a marginal supply — First on a heat-pump machine, because the whole cycle has one current peak and it is at the start. A worn socket, an extension lead or a circuit shared with another appliance shows the fault there and nowhere else, which makes it look random.
- Condensate reaching electrics — Second, and specific to a machine that makes water on purpose. A full container left unemptied, a blocked drain path or a hose that was fitted to a sink without a fall lets water track back, and protection responds to that long before anything visible fails.
- Fluff in the heat exchanger — Third, and usually a protection stop rather than a trip. The exchanger has fine fins that clog behind the filters, the machine overheats and halts itself. Owners report it as an electrical fault because a fault code appears.
- Harness chafe, fan motor and board faults — Last. A cable rubbing where it crosses a moving part gives an intermittent fault that no static test finds; boards and fans fail by stopping rather than by tripping protection.
Check in this order, and why
- Note whether it trips at the start or later — Start means compressor and supply; later means something thermal or wet.
- Move it to a dedicated outlet and run one cycle — Splits a marginal supply from a machine fault, which is the most valuable single test here.
- Empty the container and check the drain path — Checked next because condensate is the only water this machine handles and it explains most wet faults.
- Clean both fluff filters and inspect the exchanger face — Last owner step: it resolves the protection stops that are commonly mistaken for trips.
What an owner can safely check
- Unplug the machine and check the plug and socket — Look for heat marks, loose grip and any adaptor or extension lead in the path.

- Clean the door filter and the secondary fluff filter — Both, every few cycles. The second one is the one owners do not know exists.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a compressor circuit holds it longer than a simple heater would. Do not run the machine with water standing in the cabinet base, do not connect its drain hose to a sink outlet that cannot take the flow, and never use an extension lead as a permanent supply for a machine with a compressor.
When to call a technician
Call when the machine still trips on a dedicated outlet, when it trips the whole installation rather than its own circuit, on any hot smell, and when water keeps appearing in the cabinet after the container and drain path have been checked. Call an electrician instead if the socket is warm, scorched or loose. Refrigeration work on the sealed circuit is licensed work regardless of who does the rest.
