The short answer
Washing cold has two completely different explanations, and they live on opposite sides of the machine's inlet. On a commercial-duty machine, usually fed with hot water from the building supply rather than heating its own, sort supply from element first — it decides whether this is a plumbing question or an appliance one.
What you are actually seeing
- Washes come out cold or lukewarm on a hot cycle — The plain version. Establish first whether the machine heats its own water.
- Cycles take far longer than they used to — On an internally heated machine, that is the control waiting for a temperature it is not reaching.
- The cycle ends early and the load is barely washed — A control that has given up on heating, or a thermistor reading wrongly.
- Hot water is fine at the tap but not in the machine — Points at the inlet hose, the screen or the valve rather than at the building supply.
- A protective device trips at the point heating should start — Stop. That is an element leaking to earth and it belongs on the electrical safety page.
- Not this fault: no water arrives at all — That is a fill problem — taps, hoses and screens — rather than a heating one.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The hot tap is closed, or the machine is plumbed cold-only — First: free to check, and extremely common after any plumbing work or a machine swap.
- A silted inlet screen on the hot side — Second: it restricts hot water while cold flows normally, which produces a lukewarm wash and no error.
- The building water heater or a long cold pipe run — Third: the machine fills faster than the hot water can arrive, so the wash gets whatever was standing in the pipe.
- The hot inlet valve failing to open fully — Fourth: an appliance fault at last, and one that behaves exactly like a partly closed tap.
- An internal element or thermistor, if the machine has one — Fifth: many machines can boost temperature even on a hot fill, and a failed element removes that without stopping the cycle.
- The control board — Last, by elimination and rarely.
Check in this order, and why
- Find out how many inlet hoses the machine has and what they are connected to — It decides which half of this page applies, and it takes a look behind the machine.
- Check the hot tap and run the nearest hot outlet — If the building's hot water is slow or cold, the machine was never the problem.
- Check the inlet screens — Silt collects in them and restricts one side without any warning on the panel.
- Compare cycles — A hot cycle against a cool one, same load. The difference names the fault more precisely than any single run.
- Stop before the element or the thermistor — Both are inside the cabinet at line potential, surrounded by water.
What an owner can safely check
- Inspect the inlet connections at the back — Count the hoses, follow them to their taps, and confirm what is actually connected to hot.

- Isolate the taps and clean the inlet screens — Close both taps, unscrew each hose at the machine, lift out the small filter screen and rinse it clear.

- Run the nearest hot tap for a while before starting a wash — It clears the cold standing water from the pipe, and a wash that is suddenly warmer confirms the pipe run as the cause.

- Write down what each cycle did — Times, temperatures by touch, and whether the machine reported anything. That is what shortens the visit.

- Stop here if the element or the thermistor must be tested — That is a meter on live terminals in a cabinet that also contains water.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the heating circuit sits in the wettest part of the machine. Close both taps before disconnecting any hose. Do not run the machine with a panel off to feel whether it is heating. If a protective device trips at the moment heating should begin, stop using the machine and treat it as an earth fault rather than a performance complaint. The water inside can be hot enough to scald.
When to call a technician
Call when the supply side has been proven — hot water present, taps open, screens clear — and the machine still washes cold, because what remains is an element, a thermistor or a control inside a wet cabinet. Call immediately, rather than continuing to use the machine, if a breaker or a residual-current device operates at the point heating should start. Say which of the two arrangements your machine has when booking: it changes which parts the technician brings.
