The short answer
A Alliance washer that stopped cleaning well is usually being asked to do too much with too little: an overloaded drum, a dose that does not match the water, or a machine that has never had a hot maintenance wash. On a commercial-duty machine, usually fed with hot water from the building supply rather than heating its own, those three explain most complaints.
What you are actually seeing
- Clothes come out still soiled in places — Mechanical action or dose. Halve the load before changing anything else.
- Laundry feels stiff or looks grey over time — Residue building in the fabric, usually from over-dosing or under-rinsing.
- White marks or powder streaks on dark items — Detergent that did not dissolve or did not rinse, often with an overloaded drum behind it.
- Clothes come out smelling stale — The machine's own hygiene. The smell page covers the deep clean this needs.
- Results got worse gradually over months — Accumulation — residue, scale and a drawer that no longer delivers properly.
- Not this fault: the cycle does not complete — That is a cycle fault, and it belongs on its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Overloading the drum — First, and free: clothes that cannot move do not rub against one another, and that mechanical action is most of what cleans them.
- Detergent dose wrong for the water and the load — Second: too little in hard water leaves soil, too much leaves residue, and both are read as a machine that no longer cleans.
- Washing only at low temperatures — Third: acceptable for most laundry, but it leaves the machine itself dirty, and a dirty machine returns some of that to the load.
- A blocked detergent drawer or dispenser — Fourth: product that never reaches the drum cannot clean, and this is commoner than people expect.
- Restricted fill, so the load is under-wetted — Fifth: a silted inlet screen reduces the water the machine gets, and the wash suffers before anything reports a fault.
- Scale or a failing heater on a machine that heats — Last: it shows up as cool washes and stiff laundry, and it is worth checking once the cheaper causes are eliminated.
Check in this order, and why
- Halve the load and run the same cycle — One change, one result. It is the most productive single test on this page.
- Correct the dose for your water hardness — Read the pack for hard water rather than using the same scoop for everything.
- Clean the drawer and its housing — Product that stays in the drawer does nothing for the wash.
- Run a hot maintenance cycle empty — It removes residue that has been going back onto the laundry.
- Then check the fill and the temperature — Inlet screens and heating both change the wash without ever reporting a fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Wash a half load on the usual cycle and compare — Same detergent, same temperature, half the clothes. If results improve, overloading was the fault.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening the filter or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix cleaning products: bleach and acidic descalers together produce a harmful gas. Close both taps before disconnecting a hose. Do not run the machine with the drawer removed, and keep machine cleaners away from children. The water in the drum after a hot cycle can scald.
When to call a technician
Call when load size, dose, drawer cleanliness and a hot maintenance wash have all been addressed and results are still poor, because what remains is fill volume or heating, and both need measurement. Call sooner if laundry comes out with marks that look like oil or grease, which can mean a bearing or a seal contaminating the drum, and if the machine has never been descaled in a hard-water area — that is a specific job worth asking for by name.
