The short answer
When an Alliance washer trips the installation rather than its own protection, the drive and its filtering are the leading suspects, particularly where several machines share one protective device. Moisture in a wash-down room comes next, then terminations loosened by extract vibration. None of it is operator work — isolating, observing and recording is.
What you observe
- Earth protection trips as extract begins — The drive is working hardest there. It is the classic pattern on a machine of this type.
- One device trips and takes several machines with it — Points at the shared protective device and the total leakage on it, not at one machine.
- Hot smell or discolouration near the terminal area — A termination heating under load. It escalates every cycle.
- A tingle from the cabinet or the door — Stop and isolate at once. This is the shortest path to harm on the page.
- NEAR MISS — machine dead, nothing tripped — A control, door-lock or supply-isolation fault, and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this class of machine
- Drive leakage and shared protective devices — First on a machine with an electronic drive. Drives produce a small standing leakage current by design, and several machines behind one protective device add up. The result is a device that trips as a machine begins its extract while every individual machine tests sound — which is why replacing the machine never fixes it.
- Moisture ingress in a wash-down room — Second. Floors get hosed, water finds conduit entries and cabinet bases, and earth-leakage protection responds exactly as it should. It is the commonest genuinely faulty condition in a commercial laundry.
- Terminations loosened by extract vibration — Third. High-speed extract shakes a bolted-down machine every cycle, and a termination that loses tension heats under load. The tell is discolouration and smell rather than a trip.
- Motor, harness chafe and heater faults — Last. Cables rub through where they cross moving parts, giving intermittent faults no static test finds; on heated machines a heater firing at low water level fails to earth rather than open.
Check in this order, and why
- Ask what else the tripping device serves — If it serves several machines, the question stops being about this machine at all.
- Note the cycle stage at which it trips — Extract points at the drive; fill or heat points elsewhere entirely.
- Look for water at the base, conduit entries and wall box — Checked next because wash-down is the main way moisture reaches a junction here.
- Record smell, discolouration and repeatability — The last operator observation before isolation, instruments and a qualified person.

Before anyone opens anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a drive holds it considerably longer than a plain motor. Isolate at the disconnect and lock or tag it. Never hose an energised machine, never re-arm protection repeatedly to clear a backlog, and treat any tingle from a cabinet as an immediate stop.
When to call a technician
Call on the first repeat trip, on any hot smell, on any shock sensation, and whenever the installation rather than the machine trips. Where one device serves several machines and trips as any of them begins its extract, call an electrician rather than an appliance technician — the fault is in how the installation is divided, and no machine repair will change it.
