The short answer
On commercial dryers the first electrical question is really an airflow question: lint that has escaped the filter insulates components, raises temperatures and degrades wiring until something trips. Terminations loosened by vibration come second. On gas machines the burner and its controls add a hazard class of their own. Very little here is operator work beyond cleaning and isolating.
What you observe
- Hot or scorched smell from the cabinet or the exhaust — Stop the machine and isolate it. On a lint-filled dryer this is the symptom that matters most.
- Protection trips when heat is called for — Element or termination on an electric machine; ignition circuit on a gas one.
- Machine halts on thermal protection and needs cooling — Airflow restriction. The machine is protecting itself before anything trips.
- A smell of gas anywhere near the machine — Do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
- NEAR MISS — dead machine, nothing tripped — Control, door switch or supply isolation, and that belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this class of machine
- Lint accumulation around heat and wiring — First on a commercial dryer, and the reason lint control is a scheduled task rather than a chore. Fibre that escapes the filter settles in the cabinet and the duct, insulates surfaces meant to shed heat, and raises temperatures where wiring runs. Every electrical fault downstream gets worse because of it.
- Exhaust restriction — Second, and functionally the same story from outside the machine: a shared or long duct with a partly closed damper keeps heat inside, so thermal protection operates, cycles lengthen and the cabinet runs hot enough to age insulation.
- Terminations loosened by vibration and thermal cycling — Third. A machine that runs all day expands and contracts constantly, and a termination that was tight on install becomes a resistance point that heats every cycle.
- Gas train and ignition circuit, then contactors and motors — Last, and only on gas machines for the first part: ignition controls, valves and flame sensing are certified work in every jurisdiction. Contactors and motors wear with cycle count and usually announce themselves at start-up.
Check in this order, and why
- Smell for gas before anything else on a gas machine — It outranks every other check, and it ends the inspection if it is positive.
- Ask whether the machine halted itself or protection tripped — Thermal stops and electrical trips look identical to an operator and mean different things.
- Look at the lint filter, the cabinet and the exhaust run — Checked early because restriction explains most thermal stops and worsens every electrical fault.
- Note the cycle stage, the smell and which device operated — The last operator observation. Everything past this needs isolation, instruments and, for gas, a certificate.
What an operator can safely do
- Take the machine out of service and label it — A dryer that smells hot or trips protection does not run again until it has been looked at.

Before anyone opens anything
Safety
If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Otherwise, unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolate at the disconnect and lock or tag it, never run a dryer with its exhaust disconnected indoors, and never re-arm protection to finish a load.
When to call a technician
Call on the first repeat trip, on any hot or scorched smell, whenever thermal protection operates with a clean filter, and whenever the installation rather than the machine trips. Gas components are certified work in every case and there is no operator exception. Where the tripping device also serves other machines, the right call is an electrician rather than an appliance technician, because the fault may not be in this dryer at all.
