The short answer
Door faults on a Alliance machine split cleanly: water past the seal, or a lock that will not release. On a commercial-duty machine, usually fed with hot water from the building supply rather than heating its own, the first is usually debris or a tear, and the second is usually the interlock.
What you are actually seeing
- Water escaping at the front during the wash — The bellows: debris in the fold, or a tear along it.
- The door will not open at the end of the cycle — Water still in the drum, or a lock that has not released. Check for water first.
- The machine refuses to start with the door shut — The lock is not confirming, which stops everything.
- A persistent musty smell at the door — Biofilm in the fold. It is a cleaning job, and the smell page covers it properly.
- Clothes catching or tearing at the door — Something lodged in the seal, or a split in the rubber.
- Not this fault: water at the back or under the machine — That is hoses, sump or pump rather than the door.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Debris caught in the bellows fold — First: coins and wires collect at the lowest point and cut the rubber from the inside out. Free to find and free to remove.
- The door interlock worn or failing — Second: the part that moves most on the door, and the one that stops the machine entirely when it goes.
- A split or perished bellows — Third: usually the consequence of the first cause, and the repair that means the machine partly dismantled.
- Water still in the drum holding the lock shut — Fourth, and often misread as a lock fault: the machine is doing what it should, and the drainage is what needs attention.
- Door alignment or hinge wear — Fifth: a door that has dropped will not meet the lock cleanly, and the machine reports it as an open door.
- A control or wiring fault to the lock — Last: by elimination, and the least likely on this list.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for water in the drum before anything else — It changes the diagnosis completely: a locked door over standing water is correct behaviour.
- Run a hand right round the bellows fold — Debris and splits are both found by touch in under a minute.
- Close the door and listen for the lock — It either confirms or it does not, and that is the whole lock test an owner can safely do.
- Check the door for droop against the opening — A door that has dropped meets the lock badly and reports as open.
- Only then treat it as a lock or bellows replacement — Both mean the machine partly apart, and the bellows is a fiddly job even for a technician.
What an owner can safely check
- Check for standing water through the glass — If there is water, go to the drainage page: the door is locked because the cycle did not finish.

- Clean the bellows fold and remove any debris — Breaker off. Work all the way round with a cloth, then feel the fold for anything sharp still lodged in it.

- Inspect the rubber by stretching it gently — Splits along the fold line show up when the rubber is opened out, and not before.

- Test the lock by ear on two cycles — Close the door firmly each time and listen. An intermittent confirmation is the signature of a failing interlock.

- Stop here if the lock or bellows must come out — Both mean panels off beside water and live terminals, and the bellows is held by a tensioned clamp that can injure a hand.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or working at the lock — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door interlock and its wiring exactly as you found them: it holds the door while the drum turns and while hot water is inside. Never force a locked door on a machine holding water; drain it through the filter or the emergency hose first, with a tray ready and the power off. The water may be hot enough to scald.
When to call a technician
Call when the lock no longer confirms reliably, because the machine will not run at all once it stops confirming altogether, and when the bellows is split rather than simply dirty. Call sooner if the door will not release with an empty drum, since that usually means the lock has failed closed and the machine is unusable, and if clothes are being torn — that is a split or something lodged in the seal, and both get worse with every cycle.
