The short answer
Nothing at all from a Alliance dryer splits into three pictures — dead panel, live panel that will not start, and a motor that hums without turning — and each has its own first check. On a commercial-duty dryer running many more cycles a week than a household one, where wear parts and airflow are maintenance items rather than surprises, identifying which you have is most of the diagnosis.
What you are actually seeing
- No lights, no sound, nothing — Start at the wall. A dryer shares a circuit and a breaker, and both are free to check.
- The panel lights but the machine will not run — The machine is awake and refusing, which points at the door switch or a start control.
- A hum with no drum movement — The motor is being asked to start and cannot. Suspect a seized blower or the motor's own start circuit.
- It stopped being able to start after a run of slow drying — That sequence is the thermal fuse story, and the airflow behind it is the real fault.
- It starts only if you hold the button — Normal on some machines until the motor reaches speed; on others it points at a start switch or centrifugal switch.
- Not this fault: it starts and stops mid-cycle — That is a cycle fault rather than a no-start, and it is covered on its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The door is not latching, or its switch has failed — First: the cheapest and the most common. The machine is designed not to run with the door open, and a worn strike or a tired switch is indistinguishable from a door left ajar.
- Supply, breaker or outlet — Second: a dryer breaker that has tripped, or one leg lost on an electric machine, leaves anything from a dead panel to a machine that runs cold.
- A thermal fuse that has opened — Third, and it is a consequence rather than a cause: the fuse opened because airflow was restricted, and fitting another without clearing the path repeats the failure.
- The start switch or the control — Fourth: a start button that no longer makes contact, or a control that never sends the run command.
- A seized blower wheel or a jammed drum — Fifth: a coin or a screw in the blower stops the motor turning, and the motor hums against it. It is often found and fixed without a part.
- The motor, its start winding or centrifugal switch — Last: a genuine motor fault, diagnosed with a meter and reached only after the five above.
Check in this order, and why
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the switch — A click or its absence is real evidence, and it takes a second.
- Check the breaker and the outlet — Reset once. A breaker that trips again is reporting a fault, not being awkward.
- Note exactly what happens when you press start — Dead, lit-and-refusing, or humming. That single observation chooses the next step.
- Ask whether drying had been getting slower — If it had, treat the airflow path as the cause and the fuse as the symptom.
- Stop before the motor, the fuse or the control — All three sit behind panels with live terminals, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
What an owner can safely check
- Try a different cycle and press start firmly — Some machines refuse a cycle they think is already complete, and a different selection rules that out in seconds.

- Test the outlet, or reset the breaker once — On a shared or switched circuit, prove power is there before assuming the machine is at fault.

- Check the door strike and latch for wear — Look for a rounded strike or a latch that no longer seats. Closing the door with slight lift can confirm a worn hinge in one try.

- Clear the lint path before restarting after a fuse failure — If the machine died after slow drying, clean the filter, the housing and the duct now so the next fuse survives.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch and its wiring exactly as you found them: it is there to stop the drum turning with the door open, and it is not an obstacle to be worked around. Never replace a thermal fuse without clearing the airflow restriction that opened it. On a gas machine, if you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the door, the supply and the cycle selection have all been ruled out and the machine still will not start, because what remains is behind a panel at line potential. Call sooner if the motor hums without turning, if a breaker trips when the machine is asked to start, or if there is any smell of hot insulation. A machine that stopped starting after weeks of slow drying should be treated as an airflow problem with an electrical symptom, and it is worth saying exactly that when you book the visit.
