The short answer
An ice maker that has gone quiet on Alcove is usually being starved rather than broken. Water reaches it through a valve, a line and often a filter; any of those can stop the harvest while the machine itself is healthy. On a cabinet whose platform you should confirm before ranking anything: compact or full-size, one evaporator or two, mechanical thermostat or electronic control, work the water path first and the module last.
What you are actually seeing
- The bin is empty and the machine is otherwise normal — Cold food, quiet cabinet, no ice. That points at the water path rather than the cooling system.
- Cubes are hollow, small or fused into one lump — Partial fill and partial harvest: the mechanism works, the water arriving is not enough or arrives too slowly.
- You can hear the fill valve buzz but nothing arrives — A valve calling for water with no result means a closed supply, a kinked line or a frozen fill tube.
- Ice forms as a slab above or behind the mould — Water is arriving where it should not, usually past a mis-set fill tube or a leaking valve seat.
- Not this fault: the ice tastes stale but the harvest is normal — That is a filter and storage question rather than a production fault, and it is fixed by emptying the bin and changing the filter.
- Not this fault: the whole freezer is warm — Then the ice maker is a symptom and not the problem. Start with the cooling failure page for this cabinet.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The water supply is closed, kinked or restricted — First, because it explains the most cases and costs nothing to check. A shut-off left half-closed after a repair, or a line crushed behind a cabinet pushed back to the wall, stops the harvest completely.
- A frozen fill tube — Second: the tube feeding the mould passes through cold air, so a slow drip freezes in it and seals it. The valve then opens into a plug of ice, which is why the machine sounds healthy and the bin stays empty.
- A water filter past its life, or a housing not seated — Third: a clogged filter drops pressure until fill is partial, which is exactly the hollow-cube symptom. A housing left unlatched after a change does the same.
- The freezer is not cold enough to trigger a cycle — Fourth: the harvest is temperature-driven, so a cabinet sitting above 0 °F (−18 °C) makes little ice or none while looking otherwise fine.
- The bail arm, ice-level sensor or a jammed cube — Fifth: a bail arm pinned up by a bag of food, or an optical level sensor blinded by frost, tells the machine the bin is full when it is empty.
- The fill valve or the ice-maker module itself — Last: both are real failures and both are diagnosed with a meter on a live circuit, which is why they belong after everything above rather than before it.
Check in this order, and why
- Confirm the shut-off is open and the line behind the cabinet is not crushed — The cheapest check on the list, and it removes the most common cause outright.
- Look at the fill tube for a plug of ice — If it is frozen, nothing downstream matters yet, and the repair is a defrost rather than a part.
- Check the filter's age and that its housing is latched — Partial fill and hollow cubes come from here often enough to check before touching the module.
- Measure the freezer temperature — A cabinet above 0 °F (−18 °C) explains a poor harvest by itself, and then the ice maker is the wrong page.
- Check the bail arm or level sensor is free and clean — Last of the free checks, and the one that makes a working machine look dead.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the bin completely and look at what comes out — Cube shape is evidence: full cubes mean a harvest or level fault, hollow ones mean a fill fault. Do this before anything else.

- Trace the supply line from the cabinet to its shut-off — Pull the cabinet forward on its rollers if you can do it without straining, and look for a kink where it turns into the wall.

- Thaw a suspect fill tube — Warm water on a cloth held against the tube, patiently. No heat gun, no hair dryer, and nothing metal pushed into the tube.

- Change the filter and reseat its housing — Then flush several litres through the dispenser if the cabinet has one, so trapped air does not read as a fill fault.

- Stop here if the next step is testing the valve or module electrically — That is a meter on live terminals inside the cabinet, and it is the line between an owner check and a service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or the ice-maker assembly — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off before disturbing any fitting, and have towels down before you open one. Do not thaw a fill tube with a flame or a heat gun; the parts around it are plastic and the tubing behind them is not repairable at home. Leave the door switch and its wiring as you found them.
When to call a technician
Call once the water path is confirmed clear and the harvest still fails, and call sooner if water is arriving where it should not — a slab of ice above the mould, or water running down the inside of the cabinet, means a valve or fill tube that needs replacing rather than adjusting. Call as well if the freezer cannot hold 0 °F (−18 °C), because the ice maker is then the least of what is wrong.
