The short answer
Check the protected circuit first — an outdoor Alcove that is not cooling has very often simply stopped running because moisture opened its supply. Ambient load in an exposed alcove is second, a vent grille filled with leaves and insect nests is third, and a sealed-system fault is the least likely and the only one needing a technician.
What you observe
- The cabinet is dark and silent, not merely warm — The supply has opened. Start there.
- It trips again after rain or a hose-down — Moisture in the socket or a lead.
- Warm only through a hot sunny afternoon — Ambient load beyond what the cabinet can carry.
- The front grille is full of leaves or cobwebs — The condenser cannot shed heat.
- NEAR MISS — warm after a long party with the door used — Normal recovery. Give it a day.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Protected circuit opened by moisture — First because it is the failure mode unique to an outdoor installation and it stops the appliance completely. Rain into a socket or a damp lead opens the supply exactly as intended, and nothing in the fridge is wrong.
- Ambient load in an exposed alcove — Second: sun on the door, heat radiating off a masonry surround and warm air trapped in the recess put a load on the cabinet that an indoor unit never meets.
- Front vent blocked with leaves, dust or insect nests — Third, and specific to outdoors: an under-counter unit breathes through its front grille, and outdoor grilles fill with debris season by season.
- Sealed-system or fan fault — Last. Its tell is a cabinet that runs on a healthy supply, in the cool of the morning, with a clear grille, and still will not get cold.
Check in this order, and why
- Check whether the unit is running at all — One observation that splits the list in two.
- Reset the protected circuit and watch for a retrip — The top cause on an outdoor installation.
- Clear the front grille of leaves and nests — Free, and it decides the hot-weather complaints.
- Compare performance in the cool of the morning — Left until here because it separates load from fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Confirm the cabinet light and the fan respond — A dead cabinet is a supply problem, not a cooling one.
About 10 min
- Reset the protected device and note whether it holds — A repeat trip means moisture, and the unit stays off.
About 15 min
- Clear and vacuum the front grille — Look for nests and cobwebs as well as leaves.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 30 min
- Shade the alcove and measure again next morning — Use a thermometer rather than judging by hand.
Tools: thermometerAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if it runs cool-weather and still will not cool — Fan and sealed-system work is a service call.

Safety
Never defeat, bridge or bypass the protective device on an outdoor circuit — it is the only thing standing between a wet installation and a shock. Isolate the unit and unplug it before removing the grille or any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not hose down a cabinet or its socket. Keep food at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit, which is four degrees Celsius, or discard it.
When to call a technician
Call an electrician first whenever the protected device trips repeatedly, because that is a wiring or moisture problem and not an appliance fault. Call an appliance technician when the supply holds, the grille is clear, the morning is cool and the cabinet still will not come down to temperature. Stop using the unit immediately if you feel any tingle from the cabinet or the surround.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: rated ambient ranges, circuit ratings, grille and fan part identifiers and fault-code meanings, all of which differ between the outdoor-rated, indoor under-counter and freestanding families.
