The short answer
Put a torch through the front grille before anything else. On an outdoor Alcove the top noise source is debris in the fan — leaves, seed heads, webs or a nest. A masonry alcove amplifying a normal compressor is second, a cabinet rocking on settled paving is third, and the compressor itself is the least likely of the four.
What you observe
- A flutter or scrape from the front grille — Something in the fan. Look before you listen further.
- The noise appeared after a windy week — Debris blown into the grille.
- A knock each time it starts — The cabinet rocking on settled paving.
- It sounds loud outdoors but not when drawn out — The masonry recess is reflecting the sound.
- NEAR MISS — a soft gurgle after a cycle ends — Refrigerant settling. Normal.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Debris or a nest in the fan behind the grille — First because the grille faces open ground at ankle height and collects whatever the garden delivers. It is the one cause here that no indoor cabinet shares, and a torch finds it in seconds.
- A masonry alcove reflecting an ordinary compressor — Second: stone, tile and render return sound that a kitchen would absorb, so a perfectly healthy unit reads as loud purely because of where it sits.
- Cabinet rocking on settled paving — Third: outdoor slabs move with frost and time, so a unit levelled at installation ends up on three feet and knocks each time the compressor starts.
- Fan motor, compressor or its mounts — Last. Its tell is a noise that survives a clean grille, a levelled cabinet and a look behind the unit, and it needs a technician.

Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the unit at its protected circuit and unplug it before reaching into the grille; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a fan can start without warning. Never defeat the protective device on an outdoor circuit, and never hose down a cabinet or its socket to clean it. Wear gloves when clearing a nest, and get help before drawing a heavy unit out onto paving.
When to call a technician
Call when the grille is clean, the cabinet is level and the noise persists with the unit drawn clear of its recess — the fan motor or the compressor mounts are then the answer. Call a builder or a landscaper instead if the paving under the alcove has moved enough that the unit cannot be levelled. Isolate the unit immediately if a noise comes with a burning smell.
