The short answer for the HS models
On the Alcove HS refrigerator models, a noise or a vibration that is new leads with a fan blade catching ice or a stray item rather than with the cause the brand-generic article opens on.
What you observe on these models
- Clicking every few minutes with no change in cooling — A relay trying and failing to start, or a normal control cycling — those sound alike and mean very different things.
- It is much louder at night than during the day — The room is quiet and the floor and walls are carrying the sound. Worth ruling out before anything is bought.
- A ticking or scraping from inside the freezer — Regular, fast, and usually stopping the moment the freezer door is opened.
- NEAR MISS — the noise is a hiss and something smells sharp — Stop, unplug and call. That is not a noise complaint.
Causes, most likely first on the HS family
- A fan blade catching ice or a stray item — A bag, a label or a piece of packaging drawn into the fan housing makes the same sound and is just as easy to find. Ranked first here.
- A normal noise that has become audible — Gurgling after the compressor stops, cracking during defrost and a fan changing speed are all normal. They get noticed in a quiet room rather than in a faulty cabinet. Second.
- The compressor itself — The rarest cause here, and the only one that ends in a service call. A grind or a knock that survives everything above belongs to it.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the freezer door while the noise is happening — First: On most cabinets that cuts the fan. If the noise stops, the fan is making it.
- Note when it started, and what else changed that week — Second: A move, a new floor or a new recess explains more of these than any part does.
- Work out whether the sound tracks the compressor or runs constantly — Third: A noise that stops when the compressor stops is at the warm end; one that does not is elsewhere.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the cabinet first: pull the plug or drop the breaker, and do it before a screwdriver is picked up. Stored charge and an unannounced fan are both waiting behind the panel. Anything on the sealed side needs a licence and tools an owner does not have. While you work, protect the food: a refrigerator holds it safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, 4 degrees Celsius, or below.

When to call a technician
If every check above comes back clean, the remaining answer is the compressor itself, and that is the one that needs a technician rather than an afternoon. Call immediately, and unplug the cabinet first, if you smell burning, see oil around the compressor, or hear a hiss with a sharp smell.
