The short answer
When a Agostino cabinet keeps running and the food keeps warming, treat it as a heat-movement problem rather than a broken compressor. On a cabinet whose platform you should confirm before ranking anything: compact or full-size, one evaporator or two, mechanical thermostat or electronic control, cold is made in one place and delivered to another, and it is the delivery that fails first. Check the delivery path before anyone quotes you for a sealed-system repair.
What you are actually seeing
- The compartment is warm while the machine is plainly running — You can hear it; the air inside is not cold. That combination is the whole reason this page exists.
- Frost has built into a sheet where it used to be a light dusting — Look at the evaporator plate. Ice thick enough to bridge the fins stops the air that should pass over them.
- The freezer side still works and the fresh-food side does not — On a shared-evaporator cabinet that split points at the air path between compartments rather than at the sealed system.
- The machine never cycles off — A cabinet that cannot reach its set point keeps calling for cold. Continuous running is the same fault seen from the other side.
- Not this fault: the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — Silence means no power, a failed start component or a control that never called for cooling — a different page and a different first check.
- Not this fault: it cools, but only some shelves are warm — That is airflow inside the compartment — a blocked vent, a packed shelf or a damper — and it usually needs no part at all.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Frost or ice bridging the evaporator plate — Ranked first on a compact cabinet because there is so little coil to lose: once ice bridges the fins, the small volume of air that should pass over them stops, and the compartment warms while the machine runs.
- Door seal, hinge sag or a door held open by a shelf — Second: with almost no thermal reserve, a compact cabinet cannot outrun a leaking seal. Warm humid air comes in, ice forms at the coil, and the first cause above follows from this one.
- Ambient heat and clearance — Third: a cabinet skinned into a cupboard or pressed against a wall cannot reject heat, and every other symptom here follows from that. It is the cause people rule out last and should rule out early.
- The thermostat or control is set wrong, or reads wrong — Fourth: a dial knocked while loading, or a sensor drifting out of range, both read as a cabinet that will not cool.
- The condenser is blocked or its fan has stopped — Fifth: on a compact cabinet the condenser is often a skin coil or a small finned loop with a tiny fan, and either dust or a stalled blade reads as a cooling failure.
- A sealed-system fault — Last: the least likely cause, and the only one needing a licensed technician and tools an owner does not have.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and look straight at the evaporator plate — Ice bridging the fins answers the question immediately, and nothing else you can do is that quick.
- Check the door, its seal and how the cabinet is loaded — It is free, it takes a minute, and it is the cause most often behind the frost you just looked at.
- Feel the condenser area and confirm its fan is turning — Heat with no air movement explains a warm cabinet without anything being broken inside the food compartment.
- Empty the cabinet and let it stand switched off for a full defrost — If cold comes back afterwards, you have confirmed ice as the cause rather than guessed at it.
- Only then consider sensors, controls and the sealed system — Those diagnoses need instruments, and reaching for them first is how people pay for the wrong repair.
What an owner can safely check
- Move perishable food and check the compartment temperature — Use any kitchen thermometer. You want to know whether the cabinet holds 40 °F (4 °C) or below, and the freezer 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.

- Clear the load away from the rear and side vents — Leave a hand's width of clear air at the back of every shelf, then run the cabinet for a few hours before judging anything else.

- Clean the condenser and confirm its fan turns — Unplug first. A vacuum and a soft brush across the coil, then a look at the blade for dust, hair or a pet's shed coat.

- Run a full manual defrost — Empty the cabinet, switch it off, leave the doors open and let every trace of ice melt with towels underneath. Then run it empty and see whether it pulls down.

- Stop here if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — Testing a defrost heater, a thermistor or a start relay means working at line potential inside the cabinet. That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never take a heat gun or a hair dryer to a frosted evaporator: you will melt the liner, and tubing runs through it. Refrigerant work is licensed work, so leave every line, joint and valve alone. If you find oil around the compressor, stop and call someone — oil outside the tubing means the sealed system is open. Leave the door switch and its wiring exactly as you found them; they stop the fans when the door opens.
When to call a technician
Call a technician once the four checks above are clean, and immediately if the compressor is hot and silent, if you can hear it trying and clicking off, or if there is oil anywhere near it. Call as well if a full defrost brings the cold back and the ice returns within days: that is a defrost-system fault, and telling which part of it failed needs a meter inside a live cabinet. If your food has been above 40 °F (4 °C) for hours, deal with the food first — the repair can wait, the food cannot.
