The short answer
A compact Advanics that fails in a garage is usually being defeated by the room, not by a part. A cold room satisfies the single thermostat so the compressor stops, and a hot one exceeds what a small coil can carry. Move it somewhere with an ordinary year-round temperature before anything else. Dial and seal come third, and a sealed-system fault last.
What you observe
- The ice box thaws while the fridge stays cold — Classic low-ambient behaviour in a cold room.
- It barely runs in winter and constantly in summer — The room is driving the machine at both ends.
- It works indoors but not in the outbuilding — Confirms the room rather than the cabinet.
- The dial has been turned to its coldest with no effect — The limit is the room, not the setting.
- NEAR MISS — warm after a big restock — Normal recovery in a small cabinet.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Room too cold for a single-thermostat cabinet — First because a compact of this kind senses only its own compartment. In a cold garage the thermostat is satisfied by the room, the compressor stops calling, and anything meant to stay frozen thaws.
- Room too hot for a small coil — Second, and the same siting decision seen in summer. A compact has very little coil area and thin insulation, so a hot outbuilding pushes it past what it can carry.
- Thermostat dial moved, or the door not sealing — Third: a light door on a cheap hinge stops pulling itself shut as the seal ages, and a dial in an accessible spot gets knocked.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last. Its tell is a cabinet that will not get cold even in an ordinary room with a clear coil, and at this price point it usually means replacement.
Check in this order, and why
- Note how warm or cold the room itself is — Free, and it explains most failures on this class.
- Run the cabinet indoors for a day — Working there proves the fridge and indicts the room.
- Check the dial position and the door seal — Both are quick and both are commonly disturbed.
- Look at the coil and the clearance behind it — Left until here because siting usually explains it first.
What an owner can safely check
- Measure the room temperature over a full day — Note both the coldest and the warmest part of it.
Tools: thermometerAbout 20 min
- Move the cabinet indoors and run it for a day — Cooling normally here settles the diagnosis.
About 60 min
- Set the dial and leave it for a full day before judging — A small cabinet takes time to settle after any change.
About 20 min
- Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull — It should drag all round, not only in places.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE if it will not cool in an ordinary room — Sealed-system work needs a technician and a licence.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet before removing a panel or reaching behind it; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never run a fridge from a long thin extension lead in an outbuilding, and never open a sealed refrigerant line. Keep a refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit, which is four degrees Celsius, and discard food that has been warmer than that for too long.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet fails to cool in an ordinary room with a clear coil, a sound seal and a sensible dial setting — the sealed system or the compressor is then the answer. At this price point ask for the repair cost against a replacement before authorising anything. Stop using it and unplug it if the lead or the plug is warm, or the socket shows scorching.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: ambient ratings, dial calibrations, clearance dimensions and part identifiers, all of which differ between the under-counter, worktop and freestanding compact families.
