The short answer
A portable Aglucky will only freeze if it is left alone: a box this size loses most of its cold every time the door opens. Set it to its coldest and give it an undisturbed day before judging it. A setting chosen for chilling is second, a warm or enclosed position third, and frost insulating the plate last.
What you observe
- Contents are cold but never solid — Not enough uninterrupted running to freeze.
- The door is opened many times a day — Each opening costs most of the cold air.
- It freezes overnight but not during the day — Near proof that use, not the unit, is the limit.
- It sits in a warm room or in sunlight — A small unit has no margin for that.
- NEAR MISS — soft ice after a busy day — Normal in a small box used heavily.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Opened too often to ever reach freezing — First because these units live where people reach into them constantly. There is no mass of frozen food to carry the box through an opening, so the compressor starts again from nothing each time.
- Set for chilling rather than freezing — Second: one control serves the whole compartment, so a setting that keeps drinks pleasantly cold leaves the box nowhere near freezing, and both cannot be true at once.
- Warm or enclosed position — Third, and specific to indoor use: a sunny windowsill, a shelf recess or a cupboard is a far harder job than an open cool room, and there is no reserve capacity here.
- Frost insulating the plate — Last, and slow to build: with no automatic defrost, frost thickens until the plate can no longer take heat out of what is against it.
Check in this order, and why
- Count how often the door is actually opened — Free, and it explains most of these outright.
- Set it to its coldest and leave it a full day — The only fair test on a box this size.
- Move it out of sun and out of any recess — Removes the ambient handicap from the test.
- Look at how much frost is on the plate — Left until here because it builds over weeks.
What an owner can safely check
- Set the control to its coldest and close the door — Leave it undisturbed for a full day before judging it.
About 20 min
- Move it out of direct sun and clear of any recess — Leave air on every side while the test runs.
About 20 min
- Fill the box before testing rather than leaving it empty — Contents hold cold; an empty box loses it instantly.
About 15 min
- Empty it and let the plate defrost fully — Dry it before restarting. Never chip at frost.
Tools: towelAbout 60 min
- STOP HERE if it will not freeze after an undisturbed day — Thermostat and sealed-system work is a service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Disconnect the unit from every supply before opening any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a dual-voltage cooler can be fed from a socket and a vehicle lead at once. Never chip frost off the plate with a knife or screwdriver — it is thin and a puncture releases refrigerant under pressure and ends the unit.
When to call a technician
Call when the unit is at its coldest setting, in a cool open position, with a clear plate and a full undisturbed day behind it, and still will not freeze — the thermostat or the sealed system is then the answer. At this price point ask for the repair cost against a replacement before authorising anything.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: set-point ranges, pull-down times, compartment capacities and part identifiers, all of which differ between the mains-only, dual-voltage and vehicle-only families.
