The short answer
Stop using an AEG washer that trips its breaker, sparks or smells of hot insulation, and switch the circuit off at the panel. A washing machine combines water and line voltage in one cabinet, which makes this the one fault class where there is no owner repair and no safe way to reproduce the symptom for diagnosis.
What you observe
- The breaker trips the moment the machine starts — A short or a ground fault drawing current as soon as load is applied. Resetting will not improve it.
- It trips only when the machine heats the water — The heating element breaking down as it warms. Intermittent at first and reliably worse over time.
- Water inside the cabinet rather than in the drum — A leak reaching electrical components. Treat it as an electrical fault, because that is what it becomes.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A loose or corroded connection at the plug or the outlet — Ranked first because it is common, it is the cause most often misattributed to the machine, and the heat is generated in the wall rather than in the appliance.
- The heating element grounding out — Second: the classic cause of a trip that only happens once the machine calls for hot water, and it worsens every cycle.
- A leak reaching wiring or a component inside the cabinet — Third, and specific to washing machines: water tracking along a harness turns a plumbing fault into an electrical one.
- The motor or the control grounding — Last: less common than the three above, and indistinguishable from them without a meter.
Check in this order, and why
- Switch the circuit off at the panel and leave it off — First and non-negotiable, and more so here because the cabinet contains water as well as line voltage.
- Note exactly when it trips — Second: at start, at the heat step, at spin, or at no predictable point. That single answer is what the technician most needs.
- Look at the plug, the outlet and the floor under the machine — Third, with the power off: heat damage at the plug points at the supply, and water under the cabinet changes the whole diagnosis.
What an owner can safely check
- Switch the circuit off at the panel — Before any inspection, and do not reset it to reproduce the fault.
About 5 min
- Record when the trip happens in the cycle — Start, heat, spin, or unpredictable. Each points at a different part of the machine.
About 10 min
- With the power off, inspect the plug, the outlet and the floor beneath — Discolouration or melted plastic at the plug is a supply fault. Water under the cabinet is a leak that has become an electrical fault.

Safety
Switch the circuit off at the panel and unplug the washer before inspecting anything — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A standard US household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V; a large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V. Never fit a larger breaker to stop nuisance tripping: the breaker protects the wiring in the wall, and replacing it with a bigger one removes the protection and leaves the fault. Never run a washing machine from an extension lead, and never touch a machine that has given you a tingle until the circuit is off.
When to call a technician
Call for everything on this page. On an AEG washer the owner line sits at the outlet face and the cabinet exterior: looking is yours, opening is not, and that holds regardless of how straightforward the fault seems. Call immediately — and leave the circuit off meanwhile — for a tingle from the cabinet, visible scorching, a smell of hot insulation, water inside the cabinet, or a breaker that trips again as soon as it is reset.

Written for the appliance class rather than one model line. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked below. Deliberately not covered here: any internal electrical test or wiring detail, because none of it is owner work on any family.
