The short answer
On an AEG dryer, a noise or a vibration that is new usually comes down to one thing before any of the expensive ones: something loose in the drum or in a pocket. The point where an owner check ends is marked in the steps.
What you observe
- A rattle that is worst at the start of a cycle — Something loose in the drum or in a pocket rather than in the machine.
- A roar or a whistle from the blower area — The air path rather than the drive.
- The noise came with the machine being moved — Feet, floor and something dislodged are far more likely than a coincidence.

Causes, most likely first on AEG

Check in this order, and why
- Find out whether your machine vents to the outside or condenses into a tank — First: It decides which half of this list applies, and a condensing machine has noise sources a vented one simply does not have.
- Disconnect the vent duct and run it briefly — Second: If the noise changes, it is the duct or the restriction, and nothing inside the machine is wrong.
- Check pockets and the lint trap housing — Third: A coin down the side of the filter housing rattles exactly like a failing bearing until you find it.
What an owner can safely check
- Put the machine on a firm, level, solid base — A flexing floor turns a small vibration into a noise you can hear two rooms away.

- Empty the drum and run a short no-heat cycle — Free, fast, and it tells you whether the noise belongs to the machine or to the washing.

- Check pockets, the drum and the lint filter housing — Take the filter out and look down into its housing with a torch — coins collect there and they rattle.

- STOP HERE before opening the cabinet to reach rollers, the belt or the blower — That means working inside a cabinet full of lint with live terminals at the element block.
Before you open anything
Safety
Nothing comes off a dryer until the breaker is off — a capacitor holds its charge and the element block stays live until the supply is broken. Treat the lint inside the cabinet as fuel and remove it. If your machine burns gas, shut its valve before touching anything behind it, and if you smell gas do not switch anything on or off: get out and call the gas utility from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the drum scrapes or thumps with nothing in it, when the noise is there from the moment the motor starts regardless of the drum, or when the machine has been levelled and the duct cleared and the noise is unchanged. Stop using it and call immediately if you smell burning, if the cabinet is hot to touch, or if the noise arrived with clothes coming out scorched. When you book, say that the machine is built in if it is.
