The short answer
A compact Advanics will only freeze a tray while the compressor runs often enough to hold the plate below freezing. A cold room stops that happening, which is why this fails most in an unheated space. A mild dial setting is second, constant door opening third, and frost insulating the plate fourth. There is no icemaker here to fail.
What you observe

Causes, most likely first on this class
- Room too cold, so the compressor rarely runs — First because the ice box depends entirely on run time. In an unheated space the thermostat is satisfied by the room itself, the compressor stops calling, and the plate never stays below freezing.
- Dial set too mild for the ice box — Second: a setting that keeps the fridge perfectly comfortable can still leave the plate marginal, because one control is serving two very different jobs.
- Door opened constantly, or the cabinet overfilled — Third: a small cabinet loses most of its cold air each time the door opens, and packed shelves stop what is left reaching the plate.
- Frost insulating the cold plate — Last, and slow to build: with no automatic defrost, frost thickens until the plate can no longer take heat out of a tray sitting against it.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet before removing a panel or reaching behind it; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip frost off the cold plate with a knife or screwdriver — the plate is thin and a puncture releases refrigerant under pressure and ends the cabinet. Never run a fridge from a long thin extension lead in an outbuilding.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet is in an ordinary room, the dial is at its coldest, the plate is clear of frost and a tray still will not set — the thermostat or the sealed system is then the answer. At this price point ask for the repair cost against a replacement first. Stop using it and unplug it if the lead or the socket is warm.
