The short answer for the PR models
On the Absocold PR refrigerator models, a cabinet that runs but will not get cold leads somewhere the brand-generic article does not put first — a defrost heater or its control not running. The brand-generic ordering opens instead with this: the enclosure the cabinet is standing in. It moves down behind the lead here, because this family is a short run on a common stem, so its behaviour is consistent in a way the brand as a whole is not.
What you observe on these models
- It warmed up over days rather than overnight — A slow drift is an airflow or a load problem; a sudden total loss is electrical or mechanical.
- The outside of the cabinet is hot to the hand — Heat that cannot leave the condenser comes straight back into the box.
- Condensation is forming on the inside walls — Warm moist air is getting in faster than the cabinet can dry it out.
- NEAR MISS — it cools properly but the ice bin is empty — Cold cabinet, no ice: that is an ice-maker fault and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on the PR family
- A defrost heater or its control not running — This is the cause behind the frost rather than the frost itself, and it needs a meter to separate from a stuck sensor — which is where the owner checks stop. Ranked first on the PR models.
- The enclosure the cabinet is standing in — A compact cabinet breathes through a gap at the kick plate or the back panel, and the recess it is built into decides whether that gap exists. Second.
- A failed or obstructed evaporator fan — The fan is what moves cold air out of the evaporator compartment. Third.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — A leak, a blockage or a compressor that no longer pumps. Last, and that is the point of the order.
- Body: The spine for the PR family records 7 model codes built on a common stem — a short run rather than a long one, which is why a single ordering covers all of them. Where this departs from the brand-generic ordering: the cause that moves up on these models is this one — a defrost heater or its control not running — and the brand-generic lead moves down behind it.
Check in this order on the PR models, and why
- Look at the gap under and behind the cabinet before anything else — First: A compact unit rejects its heat through a very small opening, so the recess is either doing its job or it is the fault, and you can see which in a few seconds.
- Look at the back wall of the freezer for frost — Second: A sheet confirms the airflow cause; a light dusting rules it out and moves you down the list.
- Put your hand on the condenser and on the cabinet sides — Third: Heat you can feel means the system is working and the heat is not leaving; a cold condenser on a running unit means it is not.

Safety
Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off and the fan can start without warning. The sealed system is not owner work: refrigerant is under pressure and the tubing is thin. While the cabinet is warm, a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 4 degrees Celsius, or below.

When to call a technician
Call when the coil is clean, the seal passes the paper test, the cabinet has clearance and a full defrost has not brought it back — at that point the fault is behind a panel and needs a meter. Call straight away, without working down the list, if you can smell burning, if you can see oil around the tubing at the compressor, or if the cabinet trips the breaker: oil outside the tubing means the sealed system is open, and every hour it runs after that makes the repair larger. On the PR models the line sits where the check stops being one you can make from outside the cabinet. Book with the recess in mind: if the cabinet has to come out of a fitted opening before anything can be looked at, say so when you call, because that is often the longest part of the visit.
