The short answer
On a Whirlpool washer, F4E3 is about airflow. The dryer blower motor — the fan that moves air through the drum during the drying phase — did not report back the way the control expected, and the wash side is explicitly unaffected.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F4E3 | The F4E3 Error Code indicates that there may be an issue with the dryer blower motor. The wash function will operate, but the dry function will not operate. |
What you see and hear
- The wash finishes normally and the drying phase does not work — That split is the signature of this code. Everything up to the end of the spin is normal, and the load comes out as wet as any washer would leave it.
- The fan is audibly wrong, or audibly absent — A bearing on the way out drones or rattles, a blade fouling its housing ticks, and a dead motor leaves a silence where the noise used to be.
- NEAR MISS — the load comes out damp rather than wet — A drying phase that runs but underperforms is usually a lint or airflow matter and often has no code at all.
Causes, most likely first
- The fan motor or its bearing has failed — Ranked first because it is the part the code names and it works in hot, lint-laden air.
- The fan motor or its bearing is failing — A motor drawing heat into a tired bearing slows under load, and slowing is exactly what the control measures.
- The control that drives or monitors the fan has failed — Last: it is the least likely and the most expensive, and it is only worth considering once the airway is clear, the motor turns freely and the circuit reads correctly.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the airway first, because it is free and it is common — Clear the lint filter first. A fan working against a blocked filter reads as a failing fan.
- Turn the fan by hand once power is off — It should spin freely and coast. Grinding, stiffness or side-to-side play in the shaft is a bearing, and it is the answer without any meter involved.
- Measure the feed and the feedback at the control connector — This separates a fan that was never told to run from one that was told and could not.
What an owner can safely do
- Cut power at the breaker for a full minute, then restore it — It clears the stored code so you can see whether the fault returns on the next run, and on airflow codes it also lets an over-temperature condition fall back to normal before you test again.
About 5 min
- Clean the lint filter and listen for the blower on a short dry — Clear the filter completely, start a drying cycle, and listen. Silence points at the motor or its feed; noise with no drying points at the air path.
Tools: brushAbout 30 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and close both taps at the wall. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Drain the drum through the pump filter into a shallow pan before you tip or move the machine, and never defeat the door or lid interlock to reach into a drum that can turn.
When to call a technician
Call once the airway is clear and the code still appears, or immediately if the fan makes no sound at all during a run.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F4E3 as Whirlpool documents it for washers in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a front-loader, a top-loader and a combination washer-dryer can all post it, and the part it names is not in the same place on all three. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
