The short answer
On a Whirlpool dryer, a cycle that finishes with the load still wet most often comes down to dirty moisture sensor bars. Whirlpool dryers run the drum on a belt over rollers, so the noise list and the no-heat list are both short and both mechanical. The first check below needs no tools, and the list stops where a meter on live terminals begins.
What you observe
- The cycle ends after a few minutes with the load still wet — The machine believes the load is dry, which is a sensing statement rather than a heating one.
- The cycle runs far longer than the estimate — Either the load will not dry, or the machine cannot tell that it has.
- The time remaining jumps around — Normal on a sensor-dry cycle, which estimates and re-estimates as it goes.
- NEAR MISS — the drum does not turn at all — That is a no-start fault and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on a Whirlpool dryer
- Dirty moisture sensor bars — Ranked first here: sensor-dry machines read moisture through metal bars in the drum, and residue insulates them.
- Overloaded or barely loaded drum — Ranked second: sensing needs the load to touch the sensor, and a packed drum blocks its own airflow.
- Restricted exhaust duct — Last on this list: a vented machine that cannot exhaust simply recirculates its own moisture, so cycles stretch and then cut out on a thermal.
Check in this order, and why
- Compare a timed cycle against an automatic one — A good timed run and a bad automatic run isolates sensing. First: likeliest cause, least effort.
- Rerun with a half load of similar fabrics — A normal cycle on a half load settles the question. Second: it separates the next two causes.
- Feel the outside vent hood during a cycle — Weak flow explains a long cycle on its own. Third: only once the checks above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Run a timed cycle and see whether the load dries normally — This separates sensing from heating in a single run.
Tools: noneAbout 40 min
- Wipe the metal bars inside the drum with a little white vinegar — Removes the softener film that makes wet loads read dry.
Tools: cloth, white vinegarAbout 10 min
- Dry a half load of one fabric type and compare — Mixed heavy and light items confuse sensing on any machine.
Tools: noneAbout 45 min
- Check flow at the outside hood and clear the first run of duct — Most restriction sits close to the machine.
Tools: vacuum, duct brushAbout 30 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call once sensing and airflow are both clean and the cycle still misbehaves, because the next step is measurement on live terminals. Call immediately if the cabinet runs hot or you smell scorched lint.

What this page does not cover
This page covers Whirlpool dryers as a class, not one family or model line. It reasons from how Whirlpool builds this appliance — enough to rank the causes, not enough for wiring colours, torque figures or part numbers, which differ by family. Where a model-specific page exists it is linked here and is the better answer; this class page has no such child yet, so nothing is withheld by omission.
