What the smell is telling you#

The six causes by frequency#
Lint near the heating element — 35%. Lint gets past the screen filter and builds up inside the cabinet, around the element housing on WED electric models or near the burner assembly on WGD gas models. Enough of it, and the element's heat sets it alight — a burning dusty smell that can become open flame. Access on a Whirlpool is the rear panel, 6 Phillips screws; the element housing is on the right rear. Vacuum with a crevice tool around and inside the housing, and do the blower housing and the area around the motor while you are there.
Restricted exhaust vent — 25%. A clogged vent traps heat until lint inside the duct begins to smoulder. The thermal fuse may blow first and cut the heat, but it does not always react in time. Test it from outside: with the dryer running you should feel strong warm airflow at the exterior vent. Weak or no airflow means restriction. Long runs through an attic — 20-30 feet is common in ranch-style homes — collect lint faster and are harder to clean, which is where annual professional vent cleaning earns its money.
Drive belt friction — 18%. The narrow multi-rib belt, part 341241, wraps the drum, the idler pulley and the motor pulley. A seized idler bearing or a glazed belt generates friction heat and burning rubber. The Whirlpool-specific detail: the idler pulley, part W10837240, is spring-loaded, and a weakened spring drops belt tension so the belt slips on spin-up and heats itself.
Worn drum glides or felt seal — 12%. Felt or plastic glide strips carry the drum where it meets the front and rear bulkheads. Worn through, it is bare metal on metal — a scraping sound, a burning metal smell, and friction heat that can ignite lint nearby. The front drum glide kit is WPW10359272; the rear drum bearing varies by model.
Foreign object in the drum — 5%. Pen caps, candy wrappers and foam padding melt against the element or the drum and give you a plastic or chemical smell. Check the drum interior, felt seals and lint screen housing, and lift the residue with a plastic scraper rather than anything that will mark the drum finish.
Heating element shorted to housing — 5% of WED cases. A sagging element coil touching the metal housing arcs, creating localised extreme heat that scorches the housing and lights nearby lint. It may trip the breaker as well. The element is part 279838.

Diagnosing it#
Work out where the smell is strongest — front means the belt and drum area, rear means the element and vent. Check the exterior vent for airflow. Open the rear panel and look for lint around the element housing and the motor. Inspect the belt for glazing and the idler pulley for a seized bearing. Rotate the drum by hand: scraping means the glides have worn. On WED models, check the element for sag or contact with its housing.
Preventing it#
Clean the lint screen before every load — this is the single most important fire prevention step there is. Deep-clean inside the cabinet annually by pulling the rear panel and vacuuming every internal surface. Clean the exhaust vent annually, professionally if the run is long. Replace worn felt seals and drum glides before they reach metal-on-metal. And use liquid fabric softener rather than dryer sheets, which leave wax on the lint screen and cut airflow.
