F4: where the pan sits, and what is on the controls
Whirlpool's code list gives two instructions for F4: make sure the pot or pan is centred on the surface cooking area, and make sure nothing hot is resting on the touch control panel. Both are about placement. An off-centre or undersized pan may not be detected properly by the zone, and a hot lid, spoon or pan on the touch keys can confuse the controls. Small pans, espresso makers, woks and long griddles are the usual suspects. Re-centre the pan, clear the control area and restart the zone.

Situations that bring up F4
- A small pan on a large ring — The zone may not register a pan that covers only part of it. Milk pans and espresso makers are typical.
- A pan pushed to one side — Sliding a pan off-centre while stirring is easy to do. Check the position whenever you put a spoon down or stir.
- A round-bottomed wok — Little of the base touches the glass.
- A hot lid or spoon on the keys — The controls can read it as a press, or as heat where it should not be.
- An oval or long griddle — It may straddle two zones and sit centred on neither.
Ranked causes of F4
- An off-centre pan — First: the pan has drifted away from the middle of the ring. Stirring vigorously or nudging the handle moves it.
- A pan too small for the zone — Second: switch to a smaller ring.
- Something hot on the control panel — Third: a lid, utensil or pan handle resting on the keys. Steam and spills from an overflowing pot can do the same.
- A detection or control fault — Fourth: when F4 appears with a well-placed pan and a clear panel.
Checks in order
- Look at the pan's position — Is it centred on the marked ring?
- Compare pan and ring sizes — The base should cover most of the ring.
- Look at the control panel — Remove anything resting on or near the keys.
- Check the pan's base — A flat base sits and heats better than a domed one. A warped base rocks and may not be detected reliably.
- Restart the zone — See whether F4 clears.

Safety with pan placement
Safety
Never rest a hot lid, spoon or pan on the touch controls; it can damage the panel or switch a zone on. Keep handles turned away from the front edge, and do not leave a wok or a small pan balanced off-centre, as it can tip. Lift pans to move them rather than sliding them across the glass. If the controls respond on their own, switch off at the breaker.
When F4 needs a professional
Call if F4 appears with a centred, correctly sized pan and a clear control panel, or if the controls react to presses nobody made. A professional checks pan detection and the touch controls. Mention which zone shows the code and which pans you were using, as that helps separate a placement issue from a fault.
