Answer first
The usual answer on this unit is water supply shut off, kinked or never fully opened, with the bail arm or shut-off lever left in the off position close behind. Both are upstream of the ice maker itself. Everything above the last cause is owner-checkable with no tools, and this page stops before anything live.
What you actually observe
- You hear a fill buzz but no water arrives — The valve is being told to open and nothing is coming through it.
- The dispenser gives water but no ice — Supply is fine to the door, so the fault is between there and the mould.
- NEAR MISS: water pools under the crisper or on the floor — That is a drain or supply leak and belongs on the water-leak page for this unit.
The ranking: most likely cause first
- Water supply shut off, kinked or never fully opened — The saddle valve behind the unit gets closed for a plumbing job, knocked when the fridge is pushed back, or was never opened fully after installation. First, and the whole order below follows from it: it is the first thing disturbed whenever the unit is moved, and moving a refrigerator is exactly what happens before this fault appears.
- The bail arm or shut-off lever left in the off position — Every ice maker has a mechanical or infrared level sensor. Next, and for a closely related reason: it is the cause that costs nothing to rule out and the one that is most often the whole answer.
- A frozen fill tube or fill cup — A slow trickle at the end of the fill freezes in the tube instead of running into the mould. Third: on a cabinet that is opened often the fill end sits in the coldest, wettest air in the appliance, so it is where ice forms first.
- A failed ice maker module or harness — The motor, thermostat and heater live in one sealed module. Last on purpose: everything above it produces the same empty bin for a fraction of the cost.
What to check first, second, third
- Trace the water line behind the unit and check the valve is fully open — A closed or half-turned valve explains every symptom on this page at once.
- Check the bail arm is down, or that nothing blocks the level sensor window — The cheapest check on the page and the one to do first if the bin is not full.
- Look into the fill tube at the back of the ice maker for a plug of ice — Ice visible there ends the diagnosis on the spot.
The checks you can make yourself
- Pull the unit out and follow the water line back to its shut-off valve — Open it fully. Check the line is not crushed against the wall.

- Put the bail arm down, or clear anything sitting in front of the level sensor — Then give it a full day before judging.

- STOP HERE if the fault is on the sealed system — Refrigerant is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools.
Read this before you touch it
Safety
Switch the refrigerator off at its breaker, or unplug it, before any panel or kick plate comes off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit is live the whole time the unit is plugged in. Leave the door switches exactly as they are: they cut the fan on purpose. Nothing on the sealed system is owner work, because refrigerant is licensed work.
Where an owner check ends
Call once water is confirmed arriving at the mould and the freezer is holding temperature, because at that point the fault is inside the module or its harness. Call sooner if you find water anywhere it should not be, or if the unit trips a breaker when the ice maker tries to cycle.
