What this usually is
A VMX that will not start points first at a door or lid that is not latching. Most of these are settled standing in front of the machine. Nothing here needs a tool until the last cause on the list.
What you are looking at
- The panel lights but pressing start does nothing — The machine has power and is refusing, which is a different fault.
- Nothing happens until the machine has been off for a while — A control that needs a reset, or a thermal protection that has tripped.
- NEAR MISS: it starts and then stalls partway — That is a cycle fault and belongs on the cycle page for this unit.
The ranking: most likely cause first
- A door or lid that is not latching — The machine will not run until the interlock confirms the door is shut. A worn catch, a dropped door, or a sleeve trapped in the seal all leave it refusing with no other symptom. First, and the whole order below follows from it: it is the interlock every cycle depends on and a mechanical part operated several times a day, so it wears in a way the electronics do not.
- No power reaching the machine — A tripped breaker, a socket behind the machine that has worked loose, or an extension lead that has given up. Second on this unit, because a washing machine socket sits behind a heavy appliance that vibrates, which is exactly how a plug works loose.
- Child lock, delay start or a paused programme — A key symbol on the display, a delay someone set without meaning to, or a cycle left paused leaves a machine that lights up, accepts nothing and looks broken. Third: it is free to rule out, and on a machine with a touch panel it is the answer far more often than owners expect.
- A failed door interlock, mains filter or control board — The interlock assembly, the mains suppression filter and the board are each capable of leaving a machine dark or dead with no other clue, and all three need a meter to tell apart. Bottom of the list, deliberately: everything above it is free, and because this is where owner diagnosis genuinely stops.
What to check first, second, third
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock to click — No click, or an intermittent one, is the latch.
- Check the breaker and try the socket with something else — A dark panel sends you to the supply; a lit one does not.
- Look for a lock or delay symbol on the display — Both are set by accident easily and cleared just as easily.
What an owner can safely check
- Check nothing is trapped in the seal, close the door firmly and listen for the lock — If it only latches when lifted slightly, the door has dropped on its hinge.

Before you open anything
Safety
Cut the power at the breaker and close both taps before starting. Expect water at the filter and expect it to be hot on a machine that has just run, so open it in stages over a tray. Never force a locked door with water still in the drum, and never tape or wedge a lid switch to get a cycle to run.
When to call a technician
Call once the door latches properly, the socket is confirmed live, the controls are unlocked and the taps are open, because what is left is the interlock, the filter or the board. Call immediately if the machine trips a breaker, smells hot, or has burn marks at the plug.
