What this usually is
A VMX full of water points first at a blocked pump filter or coin trap. Drain it through the filter before anything else: you cannot work on a full machine. Most of this page is owner work and none of it needs the machine opened up.
What you are looking at
- It hums at the drain phase but no water goes — The pump is running against a blockage, or its impeller is jammed.
- NEAR MISS: it stops mid-cycle with the drum dry — That is a fill or control fault and belongs on the cycle page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- A blocked pump filter or coin trap — The filter behind the flap at the bottom front catches everything that leaves a pocket. Coins, clips, buttons and lint pack it solid, and then nothing drains. Ranked first on this unit: it is the first restriction in the drain path, it is designed to be opened by the owner, and on most machines it has never once been cleaned, which counts for more here because this is a nameplate you will not find a service bulletin for, so the ranking below is built from the failure modes of the class rather than from a model-specific note.
- A kinked, crushed or badly positioned drain hose — The hose is crushed against the wall when the machine is pushed back, or it is pushed so far down the standpipe that it siphons. Next, and for a closely related reason: it is disturbed every time the machine is moved, which is precisely what happens before this fault appears.
- A failed drain pump — Complete silence at the drain phase, with the filter clear and the impeller free, means the pump is not being driven or has failed. Last, and that is the point of this order: everything above it produces the same full drum at no cost, and it is genuinely the least common.
What to check first, second, third
- Open the flap at the bottom front and look at the filter — A packed trap explains a slow drain and a dead one equally well.
- Pull the machine out and follow the hose to the standpipe — A kink, a crush or a hose pushed too deep are all visible at once.
- Only once the filter, the hose, the standpipe and the impeller are clean — Silence at the drain phase after all of that is the pump.
What an owner can safely check
- With the machine off, lay towels down, put a shallow tray under the flap and unscrew the filter slowly to let the water out in stages — Clear the trap, rinse the filter and screw it back firmly.

- Pull the machine forward and check the drain hose for kinks and crushing, and that it enters the standpipe only a hand's depth — It must not sit in standing water at the end.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine or drop its breaker before you open the filter or take off a panel, and turn both taps off before a hose is disturbed. The filter holds water, sometimes hot: shallow tray, towels down, open it slowly. A washing machine is heavier than it looks and it is top-heavy when tipped. The door interlock is what keeps a drum of hot water where it belongs, so it is never bypassed.
Where an owner check ends
Call once the filter, the drain hose, the standpipe and the impeller are all clear and there is still silence at the drain phase. Call sooner if the machine trips a breaker, smells hot, or has a door locked shut on a full drum that will not empty through the filter.
