What this usually is
On a VMX dryer both a cycle that stops early and one that never ends come back to a restricted vent making a protection cycle far more often than to the control. The machine is reacting to what it senses, and what it senses is usually airflow. Most of this is cleaning rather than repair, and the page stops before any live terminal.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- It heats, then goes cold, then heats again — A thermal protection cycling on restricted airflow.
- Clothes come out hot on the outside and damp inside — Heat without airflow, which is a vent problem.
- NEAR MISS: the drum will not turn — That is a belt or motor fault and belongs on the page about a dryer that will not start.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- A restricted vent making a protection cycle — With airflow restricted, the machine overheats, a thermal protection opens, and the cycle either stops or runs cold for the rest of its length. It is the same root cause as a no-heat fault, caught earlier. It leads the list on a VMX dryer because it is the root of most dryer faults of every kind, and it is the one that gets worse until it becomes a fire risk.
- Moisture sensor bars coated with softener residue — Automatic cycles measure the load through two metal strips in the drum. Next, and for a closely related reason: it is the cause that explains the exact pattern of a timed cycle working and an automatic one failing, and it is free to fix.
- A lint screen sealed with softener film — A screen that looks clean can be sealed by a film that water will not pass. Third: it is invisible without a specific test, which is why it sits high on this list rather than being assumed clean.
- A timer or control board fault — A worn timer contact or a failed board gives a cycle that behaves differently every time. Last on purpose: the causes above produce the same behaviour for nothing, and this one needs a meter and a manual.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the dryer and feel the airflow at the outside vent — Weak air outside explains both a short cycle and an endless one.
- Run a timed cycle and see whether it dries the load properly — Timed working and automatic failing is the sensor, almost without exception.
- Hold the lint screen under a running tap — Water pooling on the mesh means the screen is sealed.
The checks you can make yourself
- Pull the machine out, disconnect the duct and clear it end to end, then check the outside flap opens — A brush on a rod does the job.

Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Unplug the dryer or drop its breaker before a panel comes off, and close the gas valve at the appliance before you move a gas machine. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Lint packed against a heat source is the real hazard in this appliance, which is why airflow is treated as urgent and not as maintenance.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call once the sensor bars are clean, the vent is clear end to end, the lint screen passes water and the door switch is sound, because what is left is the thermistor, the thermostat or the control. Call sooner if the machine overheats, smells scorched, or trips its breaker.
