What this usually is
The usual answer on this unit is a blocked air gap at the sink, with a blocked household waste or standpipe second. Both are blockages you can reach without a tool. Bail the water out first: it makes every check below faster and it stops the smell.
What you actually observe
- It drains slowly rather than not at all — A partial restriction, which usually means the hose rather than the filter.
- The machine hums at the drain phase and nothing happens — The pump is being asked to run and is either jammed or pushing against a blockage.
- NEAR MISS: dishes are dirty but the machine drains — That is a cleaning fault and belongs on the cleaning page for this unit.
The ranking: most likely cause first
- A blocked air gap at the sink — Where an air gap is fitted on the worktop, it is a small chamber the drain water passes through. Full of soil, it stops the flow and often overflows onto the worktop first. It leads the list on a VIVOHOME dishwasher because it is the part of the drain path that is on show and still never cleaned, because most owners do not know what it is.
- A blocked household waste or standpipe — If the sink is slow as well, the fault is not in the appliance at all. Next, and for a closely related reason: the sink is the free test that tells you whether to work on the appliance or the plumbing.
- The filter and sump packed with debris — Everything the machine washes off ends up here. Third: it is the first restriction in the path, it is reachable without a tool, and on most machines it has never been cleaned.
- A failed drain pump or a stuck check valve — A dead pump makes no noise at all at the drain phase, and a check valve stuck shut gives the same standing water with the pump running normally. - Lift the chrome cover on the worktop fitting and look inside — Debris there stops the machine draining and is trivially cleared.
- Fill the sink and let it out while watching how fast it goes — A slow sink means the plumbing, not the dishwasher.
- Twist out the filter and look into the sump beneath it — A packed filter explains both a slow drain and a total one.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker and shut the stop valve before any of this. The heater in the base stays hot for a long time after the last cycle. There is more broken glass in a dishwasher sump than anyone expects, so look before you reach, and use a cloth. The door latch is an interlock: it does not get taped, wedged or bypassed.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call once the filter, the drain hose, the air gap and the household waste are all clear and the machine still holds water, because at that point the pump or its valve is the fault. Call sooner if the machine trips a breaker, if water is reaching the floor, or if you find glass you cannot safely remove.
