The short answer
On a VIVOHOME dishwasher poor cleaning is usually loading that blocks the spray arms rather than a failed pump: the machine is moving water, but not onto the dishes. The first three checks are free and they settle most cases in an evening.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- The top rack cleans and the bottom does not, or the reverse — One spray arm is not getting its share of the water.
- A white film on glasses that wipes off — Hard water and rinse aid rather than a machine fault.
- NEAR MISS: there is standing water in the bottom at the end — That is a drainage fault and belongs on the drainage page for this unit.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Loading that blocks the spray arms — A tray laid flat, a handle hanging through the rack or a tall pot in the wrong place stops an arm turning. Everything behind the blockage comes out as it went in. It leads the list on a VIVOHOME dishwasher because it is free to rule out, it changes with every load, and it explains the pattern where some items are clean and others are untouched.
- Spray arm holes blocked with scale or debris — The jets are small and they block from the inside with grit and from the outside with scale. Second: in a hard-water area it happens to every machine eventually, and it produces exactly this slow decline rather than a sudden failure.
- A filter and sump full of debris — The filter under the lower arm catches food soil so it is not sprayed back. Third, once the two above are clean: it is a consumable maintenance job that is not mentioned at the point of sale, so most machines have never had it done.
- A weak wash pump or a stuck diverter valve — The pump makes the pressure and the diverter shares it between the arms. Last, and that is the point of this order: everything above it produces the same dirty dishes for nothing, and this one is the only parts job on the list.
Check in this order, and why
- Spin both spray arms by hand with the racks loaded as usual — Anything that stops an arm is your fault, and you can see it in seconds.
- Take the arms off and hold them up to the light — Blocked jets are obvious once the arm is off the machine.
- Twist out the filter under the lower spray arm and look at it — If it is packed, you have found both the grit and the poor cleaning.
The checks you can make yourself
- Load the machine as you normally would, then turn each spray arm by hand through a full revolution — Anything that catches is the cause. Reload and run it again.

- Unclip both spray arms and clear every jet with a cocktail stick, then rinse them through — Do not use a needle or wire: it opens the jets out and changes the spray pattern.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the dishwasher off at its breaker or unplug it before removing any panel, and turn off the supply valve under the sink before touching a hose. The heating element in the sump stays hot for a long time after a cycle: let it cool before you put a hand in there. Never run the machine with the kick plate off.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call once the filter is clean, the arms turn freely and spray properly, the detergent is fresh and the water is arriving hot, because at that point the machine is not making pressure. Call sooner if you see water outside the machine or it trips a breaker.
