On a Vitara Forte refrigerator a leak is usually a blocked or frozen defrost drain, not a burst pipe: the water is meltwater that the unit makes on purpose and has lost track of. Most of this page is owner work, and it stops before any panel with wiring behind it.
What you are looking at
- Drips run down the inside of the back wall — Condensation forming where it should not, usually a sealing problem.
- Water is at the back of the unit, near the floor — That is the pan or the supply line, not the drain.
- NEAR MISS: the unit makes no ice and the floor is dry — That is an ice production fault, not a leak.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- A blocked or frozen defrost drain — Every frost-free unit melts ice on a cycle and sends the water down a drain to a pan on the compressor. Blocked with debris or plugged with ice, that water goes into the cabinet instead. First, and the whole order below follows from it: it is the one fault that explains water inside the cabinet, and water inside the cabinet is what most owners are actually looking at.
- A weeping water line or a loose fitting — The plastic line to the ice maker and dispenser runs behind the unit and is crushed or nicked when the fridge is pushed back. Second on this unit, because it is the part of the appliance that is disturbed every time the unit is moved, and a slow weep takes days to become visible.
- A door seal letting humid room air in — Warm air reaching a cold surface condenses. Third, once the two above are clean: on a cabinet in a kitchen that is cooked in, humidity is the water source and the seal is the only thing holding it out.
- An ice maker overfilling or its fill tube leaking — A valve that does not close fully, or a fill tube that has worked loose, drips continuously into the freezer. Last, and that is the point of this order: it explains a leak that gets worse rather than better, and it is the only cause here that is also making a mess inside the freezer.
The order to check in
- Look for ice or standing water under the crisper drawers — Water inside the cabinet is a drain fault until proven otherwise.
- Pull the unit out and run a dry hand along the water line and its fittings — A weep leaves a mineral trail even when it is dry at the time.
- Test the seal with a sheet of paper all the way round the door — Free slide anywhere means a gap and a steady supply of moisture.
The checks you can make yourself
- Empty the bottom of the cabinet, find the drain hole at the back of the freezer floor and flush it with warm water — A turkey baster is the right tool. Never push wire into the hole.

- Shut the water off, pull the unit out and check the line and every fitting for damp or mineral crust — Look where the line passes the cabinet edge: that is where it gets crushed.

- STOP HERE if the fault is on the sealed system — Refrigerant is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools.
Before you open anything
Safety
Water and electricity are together in this fault, which is the one thing that makes it urgent. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before pulling the unit out or removing the kick plate, and dry the floor before you kneel on it. Shut the water supply off before you touch any fitting. Never push wire down a defrost drain and never thaw one with an open flame.
Where an owner check ends
Call if water is reaching the compressor compartment or the unit trips a breaker, and stop using it until someone has looked at it. Call as well once the drain is clear, the seal is good and the line is dry, because what is left is behind a panel.
