The short answer
A Speed Queen that will not drain is either blocked or has lost its pump drive. A silent drain step on a belt-driven machine points at the belt; a labouring or slow drain points at a blockage in the hose, the pump or the standpipe. The hose and standpipe checks are owner work and cost nothing. Belt and pump work inside the cabinet is a service call.
What you observe
- The cycle ends with water still in the tub — It never drained rather than drained slowly.
- The drain step is completely silent — On a belt-driven machine, suspect the belt or linkage.
- Draining has been getting slower for weeks — A partial blockage building in the hose or pump.
- A smell of hot rubber after a cycle — A belt slipping against a stalled pump. Stop and look.
- NEAR MISS — water backs up out of the standpipe — That is household waste, not the washer.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Blockage in the drain hose or at the pump — First because it is the cause that comes with a warning: drains get slower before they stop. On this platform it matters more than elsewhere, because a stalled pump takes the belt with it.
- Pump drive belt slipping, off or broken — Second, and specific to a belt-driven machine: a silent drain step with everything else working normally points here and nowhere else.
- Drain hose kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe — Third. Usually caused by pushing the machine back against a wall, and free to correct.
- Standpipe restricted, or the pump itself failed — Last. Water backing up out of the standpipe moves the fault to the plumbing; a seized pump with a good belt is the remaining case.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen at the drain step for the pump being driven — Silence and effort mean two different faults here.
- Straighten the hose and check its depth in the standpipe — Free, fast, and the commonest external cause.
- Watch the standpipe while the machine drains — Overflow there moves the fault out of the appliance.
- Note any smell of hot rubber after a cycle — Left until here, but it is decisive for a belt diagnosis.

- Drain the tub by lowering the hose into a bucket — Gravity empties most of it. Do this before anything else.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and close the supply taps. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep hands clear of belts and pulleys entirely — a belt-driven machine has exposed moving parts inside the cabinet that will not wait for you. A tub full of water is extremely heavy, so drain it into a bucket before moving or tilting the machine, and get help when you do.
When to call a technician
Call when the hose is straight and correctly seated, the standpipe takes water freely, and the machine still will not empty — the belt or the pump is then the answer and both are inside the cabinet. Call sooner if the drain step is silent or you smelled hot rubber, because a slipping belt does further damage every cycle. Call a plumber instead if the standpipe overflows on a drain.
