In short
A microwave that runs, lights and turns but leaves food cold has usually lost a high-voltage component, and that is not owner work. On this machine the first thing worth ruling out is power level, a defrost program or a keep-warm setting.
What you observe
- Everything looks normal but nothing warms — The oven is running its cycle without producing energy.
- A loud hum or buzz that was not there before — A high-voltage component under strain; stop using the oven.
- It heats for a minute and then stops heating — A thermal cut-out opening as the magnetron warms up.

Causes, most likely first on a SKS microwave
- Power level, a defrost program or a keep-warm setting — A machine left on a low power level cycles the magnetron on and off and appears not to heat at all. Ranked first on a SKS microwave: a power level set once and forgotten looks identical to a failed magnetron from the outside.
- An interlock switch failing to confirm the door under load — This gives an oven that appears entirely normal and produces nothing.
- Thermal cut-out opening because the vents are blocked — A magnetron that overheats is switched off by a cut-out while the fan, the light and the turntable carry on.
- Low mains voltage, or an extension lead — A microwave is one of the heaviest loads in a kitchen, and a long or thin extension lead starves it.
Check in this order, and why
- Set full power and a short time on a cup of water and watch — Check the display for a power-level or program indicator before you start.
- Note whether the machine runs a full cycle normally with no heat at all — Nothing further can be checked from outside; the cabinet stays on.
- Note whether it heats at first and then stops, and check the vents — Heat that fades after a minute is a cut-out, not a failed magnetron.
What an owner can safely check
- Put a cup of water in, set full power for one minute, and feel the water afterwards — Water that is clearly warmer has output; water that is unchanged does not. Never run the oven empty.

Safety
Unplug the microwave before you touch anything beyond the cavity and the door. The outer cabinet stays on: a microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that can retain a lethal charge long after the plug is out, and it is not an owner-serviceable machine. Never defeat, tape or bend a door interlock switch — those switches are the only thing that stops the magnetron running with the door open. Never run the oven empty, and stop using it altogether if the door will not close and latch properly.
When to call a technician
The owner's part is the settings, the socket and the vents. The magnetron, the diode, the capacitor and the interlock switches are all high-voltage work, and a microwave that hums or smells hot should be unplugged rather than retested. Door and hinge work on a panelled machine is a trained job: the panel weight is carried by the hinge springs and a mis-set hinge damages the cabinetry as well as the appliance.
