In short
An ice maker that has stopped is almost always a water problem rather than a broken ice maker. On this machine the first suspect is water supply line, shut-off valve or a kinked feed.
What you observe
- The bin is empty and the maker is silent — No cycle is being attempted, which points at a switch, an arm or a sensor.
- Cubes are small, hollow or half-formed — Water is arriving but not enough of it — a restriction rather than a stoppage.
- A thin sheet of ice across the bottom of the bin — Water reached the mould and overflowed, which is a fill or a level problem.
- NEAR MISS — ice is fine but water dispenses slowly — That is the filter or the supply pressure, and it usually shows at the dispenser before the ice maker.
Causes, most likely first on a Silhouette Select refrigerator
- Water supply line, shut-off valve or a kinked feed — The line behind the cabinet is easy to crush when the machine is pushed back into place. Ranked first on a Silhouette Select refrigerator: everything downstream depends on it, and it is the part most often disturbed when the machine is moved.
- Shut-off arm or bin sensor holding the maker off — The arm or the infrared bin sensor stops production when it believes the bin is full.
- Water filter clogged, overdue or not seated — A filter at the end of its life passes enough water for a slow glass and not enough for an ice mould.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger a harvest — A freezer running warm produces slow, soft, fused ice rather than no ice at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the cabinet out and follow the line from the valve to the machine — A kink or a part-closed valve is visible without tools.
- Check the arm is down, or that nothing blocks the sensor window — An arm held up by anything at all switches the maker off.
- Take the filter out and run the dispenser with the bypass in place, if the machine has one — Reseat the cartridge firmly: a partial seat behaves exactly like a blockage.
What an owner can safely check
- Trace the water line from the shut-off valve to the back of the cabinet and straighten any kink — Then open the valve fully. A line crushed behind the machine is the commonest cause of no ice.
Tools: torchAbout 20 min
- Empty the bin completely, wipe the sensor windows, and make sure the shut-off arm swings freely — A maker that restarts within a few hours was being told the bin was full.

- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as you found it. Never take a knife, a screwdriver or a heat gun to frost on an evaporator: the tubing behind it is thin, pressurised, and a puncture ends the appliance. Empty a loaded cabinet before you move it.
When to call a technician
Call once the supply, the filter, the arm and the fill tube are all clear and the mould is still empty, because what is left is the inlet valve or the module and both are behind fixed panels. Call sooner if you find water anywhere outside the cabinet. On an entry compact unit, weigh the cost of a sealed-system repair against a replacement; anything outside the sealed system is generally worth fixing.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Silhouette Select refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the better answer — read it first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, all of which differ between families under one nameplate.
