The answer first
A leaking refrigerator is usually draining somewhere it should not, rather than losing water it was given. The ranking here starts at defrost drain blocked.
What you observe
- Water under the crisper drawers inside the cabinet — Classic blocked defrost drain: the water backs up and over.
- A puddle on the floor at the front — Water has run forward under the cabinet, which usually means the drain or the pan.
- A puddle at the back or under one corner — Points at the supply line, the valve or a cabinet that is out of level.
- NEAR MISS — water appears only when the dispenser is used — That is the dispenser line or its drip tray, and it has its own fix.
Causes, most likely first on a Sharp refrigerator
- Defrost drain blocked — The drain carries melt water from the evaporator to the pan, and food debris or ice blocks it. Ranked first on a Sharp refrigerator: it fails slowly, so the first sign is usually ice under the drawers rather than a puddle.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — The pan under the cabinet is meant to evaporate the defrost water; cracked or out of place, it drips.
- Water line, filter head or inlet valve leaking — A line pinched when the machine was pushed back can split and leak only under pressure.
- Door seal leaking, so humid air condenses inside — This produces water inside the cabinet with no plumbing involved at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for water or ice under the crisper drawers at the back of the cabinet — Pour a little warm water into the drain opening and see whether it clears.
- Pull the lower grille and look at the pan with a torch — A pan that is simply full points at a humid room rather than a fault.
- Pull the cabinet out and dry every joint, then look again after an hour — Follow the line from the shut-off valve all the way to the cabinet.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the lower shelves and flush the drain opening at the back with warm water from a turkey baster — Warm water clears an ice plug and most debris. Never force wire down the drain.
Tools: turkey baster, warm water, towelsAbout 30 min
- Pull the lower grille, slide the pan out, empty it and check it for cracks before reseating it — A cracked pan is a cheap part; a displaced one costs nothing at all.
Tools: torch, towelsAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as you found it. Never take a knife, a screwdriver or a heat gun to frost on an evaporator: the tubing behind it is thin, pressurised, and a puncture ends the appliance. Empty a loaded cabinet before you move it.
When to call a technician
Call when you have cleared the drain, checked the seals, levelled the cabinet and dried every joint and the water still returns, because what is left is the inlet valve, the drain tube inside the insulation, or the sealed side. Shut the water supply off in the meantime. Sharp parts are generally obtainable through appliance parts distributors, which makes a repair worth pricing rather than writing off.

What this page does not cover
This is the generalised Sharp refrigerator page. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked above and is the more precise answer for your unit. Left out on purpose: part numbers, connector colours, the order panels come off in, and every torque figure — a generalised page cannot be right about any of them.
