The answer first
A leaking refrigerator is usually draining somewhere it should not, rather than losing water it was given. The ranking here starts at ice maker fill overshooting or the fill tube spraying.
What you observe
- Water under the crisper drawers inside the cabinet — Classic blocked defrost drain: the water backs up and over.
- A puddle on the floor at the front — Water has run forward under the cabinet, which usually means the drain or the pan.
- A puddle at the back or under one corner — Points at the supply line, the valve or a cabinet that is out of level.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm as well as wet — Treat that as a cooling failure first; the water is a consequence of the ice, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on a Simplex refrigerator
- Ice maker fill overshooting or the fill tube spraying — A fill that runs long, or a fill tube partly blocked with ice, puts water outside the mould. Ranked first on a Simplex refrigerator: it is the one cause here that produces water on a schedule rather than continuously.
- Defrost drain blocked — When the drain blocks, defrost water backs up under the drawers and then runs forward onto the floor.
- Water line, filter head or inlet valve leaking — Push-fit connections at the filter head and the valve work loose over time and weep rather than burst.
- Door seal leaking, so humid air condenses inside — Warm room air entering past a tired gasket condenses on the cold walls and runs down them.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for a sheet of ice under the bin or water tracking down the freezer wall — Switch the ice maker off for a day: if the water stops, it is answered.
- Look for water or ice under the crisper drawers at the back of the cabinet — Pour a little warm water into the drain opening and see whether it clears.
- Pull the cabinet out and dry every joint, then look again after an hour — Follow the line from the shut-off valve all the way to the cabinet.
What an owner can safely check
- Switch the ice maker off for a day and see whether the water stops — If it does, clear the fill tube with warm air before turning the maker back on.

- Empty the lower shelves and flush the drain opening at the back with warm water from a turkey baster — Warm water clears an ice plug and most debris. Never force wire down the drain.

Safety
Disconnect power at the plug or the breaker before opening anything, and give a capacitor time to bleed down before you reach past a board. Nothing sharp goes near an iced evaporator: thin tubing, refrigerant under pressure, no home repair. Refrigerant work is licensed work, so the sealed system is where the owner job ends. Empty the cabinet before you move it.
When to call a technician
Owner work here is the drain, the pan, the seals and the levelling. A weeping valve, a split line inside the cabinet and a drain blocked beyond the opening are technician work — and a mains leak should have the supply valve shut immediately. Age is the deciding factor: if the machine is old enough that the control board is the suspect, price the board against a replacement machine before agreeing to the work.
