Watch what the machine is doing, not what the clock says
Put your hand on the door and listen. Water entering means it is retrying a fill. Pump noise means it is retrying a drain. Slow rocking of the drum means it is redistributing before a spin. Each of those is a different cause, and the display tells you none of them while the sound tells you all three.
What you find
- The displayed time stops falling and stays at the same figure — The signature of a retry loop rather than a frozen machine.
- The displayed time increases part way through — The machine revising its estimate upward after a failed step, which is informative rather than alarming.
- Water enters in short bursts with long pauses between — A fill being retried, which points at supply restriction.
- The pump runs repeatedly without the level dropping — A drain being retried, which points at the filter or the hose.
- The drum rocks gently for long periods without spinning — The rebalance loop, and it is the most common single reason for a stalled estimate.
- NEAR MISS: a longer cycle than expected on a heavy programme — Not a fault; programmes vary widely in length on the same machine.
Ranked by what you hear
- The spin rebalance loop — First. The machine will not spin a drum it judges uneven, so it redistributes and retries, and a single heavy item can hold it there for a long time.
- A restricted drain — Second. The pump runs, the level does not fall, and the machine keeps trying because it will not spin with water inside.
- A restricted fill — Third. Slow water in means the level target is reached late or not at all, and the estimate stretches to match.
- Sensing or control trouble — Last. It exists, but the three physical loops above account for nearly every stalled estimate.
Listen, then load, then check
- Listen at the door for water, pump or rocking — It identifies the loop in under a minute and without any tools.
- Pause the cycle and look at the load composition — One bulky or waterproof item is the top cause and it is visible immediately.
- Check the drain hose and taps if the sound points at water — It addresses the second and third causes and both are free to inspect.
- Only then consider the machine at fault — The listening test usually finds a real physical reason first.
Owner steps
- Stand at the machine for a minute and note what you can hear — Water, pump or rocking. Each points at a different loop and the display shows none of it.
About 5 min
- Pause the cycle, open the drum when safe, and redistribute the load by hand — A single towel or a waterproof item wrapped to one side causes most rebalance loops.
About 15 min
- Remove one or two items if the drum is tightly packed — A drum that cannot move its load freely cannot balance it either.
About 10 min
- Check both taps are fully open and the drain hose is not kinked — The water-side causes, both accessible and both free.
About 10 min
- STOP before the pump filter, the lock or the console is opened — Standing water sits next to live wiring inside the cabinet, and that is the boundary.
Before opening the drum
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and turn off the water supply before touching a hose. Do not force the door open while the drum holds water above the glass. Never put a hand into a drum that is still turning, and dry the floor before working near an energised appliance.
When to call
Call if the loop continues with a small, evenly distributed load and clear hoses, because the machine is then failing a step for a reason inside it. Call promptly if water reaches the floor or the breaker trips. Report which sound the loop makes: water, pump or rocking narrows the visit to one subsystem straight away.

Scope of this page
This is the stalled-estimate view of the Samsung washer class; a cycle that will not start at all, or that fails on load composition, is covered on the companion page. Programme lengths and retry limits differ by family and belong on the page for your model.
