The short answer
On a Samsung freezer, the first thing to check is a defrost fault icing the evaporator. A freezer that runs without holding temperature is usually losing the cold it makes rather than failing to make it. Samsung freezers share the board-managed defrost architecture of the company refrigerators, which means the freezer can be running perfectly and still be icing over. Check the seal, the airflow and the frost pattern before anyone mentions the compressor.
What you observe
- Contents are soft and the unit runs constantly — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below; soft contents mean it is running well above that.
- Heavy frost on one wall but not the rest — A localised frost sheet is an air leak or a defrost fault rather than a cooling fault.
- The door needs a firm push to stay shut — A door that does not close itself is letting warm air in continuously.
- NEAR MISS - the unit is silent and the light is out — No power at all is a supply or start-relay fault, and the checks below are not the right ones.
Causes, most likely first on Samsung
- A defrost fault icing the evaporator — On a frost-free unit, a defrost system that has stopped clearing the coil buries it in ice. Ranked first because once the coil ices over the air stops moving, and the symptom looks identical to lost cooling. On Samsung, the defrost cycle is board-managed here too, so the box can be running perfectly and still be icing itself up.
- Blocked vents or an overpacked cabinet — Air has to circulate around the contents. Ranked second because it costs nothing to correct and it is the commonest self-inflicted cause.
- A dusty condenser or a blocked airway — The condenser has to reject heat into the room. Ranked third because a freezer often lives in a garage or a basement, where the coil loads up faster than in a kitchen.
Check in this order, and why
- Look behind the rear interior panel for a solid frost sheet — A coil packed with ice is the diagnosis, and it also explains a fan that has gone noisy. It comes first because the ranking above puts a defrost fault icing the evaporator ahead of everything else on this platform.
- Find the vents and clear anything pressed against them — Leave a gap around each vent and see whether the temperature recovers overnight.
- Look at the coil and the clearance around the cabinet — Visible dust and a tight installation are both owner-correctable in half an hour.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the freezer and defrost it fully — Move the contents to a cooler, switch the unit off at the breaker, and leave the door open until every trace of frost has gone before restarting.

- Repack the freezer with clearance around the vents — Pull everything away from the interior vents, repack so air can move between packages, and leave the unit to recover for a full day before judging it.
About 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next check needs a meter on live terminals — Everything past this point is measured with power applied, and that is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.

Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the evaporator with a metal tool: the tubing is soft and one puncture ends the repair. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below, so move the contents to a cooler before you start work rather than during it.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the airflow, the frost pattern and the condenser are all proven good and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil at the compressor, and treat a full freezer of food as a reason to move it rather than a reason to wait.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Samsung freezer as a class, not one family or one model line. What changes from build to build - wiring colours, part numbers and component test values - is deliberately absent. Where your model plate names a line, use that line's documentation first.
