The short answer
A static freezer has no fans in it at all, which removes most of the usual causes and puts the cabinet and its surroundings at the top. Ranked first on this platform: The cabinet touching a wall, a pipe or the next unit. The checks below follow that ranking, and the first of them need no tools and no panel removed.
What you observe
- The noise is loudest from the side or behind rather than in front — Direction is the diagnosis.
- The noise changes if you lean on a corner of the cabinet — A sound that responds to your weight is a mounting sound.
- Intermittent ticks that do not line up neatly with the compressor cycle — Anything that does not follow the cycle probably is not driven by it.
- NEAR MISS — a gurgle, a trickle or a soft tick a few minutes after it stops — Refrigerant settling and metal contracting are normal on every cabinet and no repair removes them.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- The cabinet touching a wall, a pipe or the next unit — Freezers are pushed into corners and utility rooms where there are pipes, shelving brackets and neighbouring cabinets to touch. It ranks first on this platform because with no evaporator fan and no condenser fan, everything this cabinet can produce comes from the compressor, the tubing or something it is touching — and contact is far more common than either of the others.
- The cabinet rocking on uneven feet — A cabinet resting on three feet turns ordinary compressor vibration into a drum. It ranks second here because static cooling means cold falls and warm rises inside the cabinet with nothing to move it, so temperature is a function of where in the box you measure and how the shelves are packed.
- The load shifting inside — Packets settling in a basket, a bag of ice collapsing or two containers vibrating together produce ticks and rattles that appear to come from the machine. It ranks third rather than higher: real on this platform, and less common than the causes above it.
- Hardened compressor mounts — The rubber grommets under the compressor are there to keep its vibration out of the shell. Ranked fourth: worth checking once the causes above have come back clean.
Check in this order, and why
- Ease the cabinet forward a couple of inches and listen again — If it leaves with the contact, there is nothing to repair. It leads because it tests the top-ranked cause.
- Push each top corner diagonally and watch for movement — Seconds, and it finds the commonest cause on any platform. Tests the second-ranked cause.
- Take out the top basket and run the cabinet for an hour — It is free and it removes the most common false alarm. Tests the third-ranked cause.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull the cabinet clear of every surface, including the cord and any pipework — A cord trapped between cabinet and wall buzzes convincingly.

- Level the cabinet on its feet until no corner moves under hand pressure — Check it loaded, not empty — the load changes how it sits.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or putting a hand near a fan — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a fan stopped by an open door will restart without warning.
