What you observe
- The noise is loudest from the side or behind rather than in front — Direction is the diagnosis.
- A rising whine or chirp that has got worse over weeks — Gradual onset separates a bearing from an obstruction.
- The noise changes if you lean on a corner of the cabinet — A sound that responds to your weight is a mounting sound.
- NEAR MISS — a hiss or a sizzle a couple of times a day — That is the defrost cycle doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- The cabinet touching a wall, a pipe or the next unit — Freezers are pushed into corners and utility rooms where there are pipes, shelving brackets and neighbouring cabinets to touch. It ranks first on this platform because a built-in cabinet is fixed to the carcass by design, and a carcass panel radiates far more sound than the appliance panel driving it — which is why the noise usually seems to come from the cupboard rather than the freezer.
- A dry fan bearing — A fan motor that runs cold and wet for years eventually loses its bearing lubrication, and the result is a chirp, a squeal or a whine that arrives gradually and gets worse. It ranks second here because the tolerances on this platform are tight enough that a fault which would be inaudible on a mass-market machine is obvious on this one.

Check in this order, and why
- Ease the cabinet forward a couple of inches and listen again — If it leaves with the contact, there is nothing to repair. It leads because it tests the top-ranked cause.
- Listen for whether the noise rises and falls with the fan or with the compressor — The two run on different schedules, and that tells you which one it is. Tests the second-ranked cause.
- Push each top corner diagonally and watch for movement — Seconds, and it finds the commonest cause on any platform. Tests the third-ranked cause.

- Pull the cabinet clear of every surface, including the cord and any pipework — A cord trapped between cabinet and wall buzzes convincingly.
