The short answer
On a machine this old, what has worn out ranks above what has broken, and the drive train has been wearing since long before most of its owners. Ranked first on this platform: The drive belt or the transmission. The checks below follow that ranking, and the first of them need no tools and no panel removed.
What you observe
- A squeal on the spin, or a clunk each time the drum changes direction — A noise at the reversal is drive rather than balance.
- It walks across the floor or bangs hard on the spin, and it is a recent installation — A new machine that hammers is almost always bolts or levelling.
- A rumble that rises and falls exactly with the spin speed — A noise tracking drum speed rather than motor speed is the drum bearing.
- NEAR MISS — a rhythmic thumping that stops if you redistribute the load — That is an out-of-balance load rather than a fault, and it is the commonest false alarm on this appliance.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- The drive belt or the transmission — On a belt-driven machine the belt is a consumable and the transmission beneath it is not. It ranks first on this platform because the belt and the transmission on a mechanical top-loader are consumable parts with a service life measured in years, and on a machine of this vintage they are far past it — which makes drive noise the expected finding rather than a surprise.
- The machine not standing level, or still on its transit bolts — A washer that rocks will move and bang on every spin. It ranks second here because this is an old machine by any measure, and on an old machine the ranking inverts: what wears out ranks above what breaks, and what has never been serviced ranks above both.
- A worn drum bearing — The bearing carries the drum shaft and it wears slowly. The noise starts as a hum on the spin, becomes a rumble that rises and falls with the drum speed, and ends as a roar. It ranks third rather than higher: real on this platform, and less common than the causes above it.
- An out-of-balance load — One heavy item, or a load that has balled up on one side, makes the drum run eccentric. Ranked fourth: worth checking once the causes above have come back clean.
Check in this order, and why
- Note whether the noise happens at the direction change or at speed — They are different parts, and the timing separates them. It leads because it tests the top-ranked cause.
- Push the top corners diagonally, and look at the back panel for transit bolts — Both checks are free and both are frequently the whole answer. Tests the second-ranked cause.
- Turn the drum by hand and feel for roughness or play at the back — Roughness or up-and-down play locates it without dismantling. Tests the third-ranked cause.
What an owner can safely check
- Remove any transit bolts from the back panel and level the machine on its feet — Lock the feet once set; a foot that unwinds undoes the work.

- Open the door, spread the load evenly round the drum and restart the spin — Wash single heavy items with a few lighter ones for company.
