The short answer
F4 E4 on a Maytag dryer is the control reporting a fault in the electrical supply. The code table records the documented meaning, and the causes below it are ordered by how often each one is the answer. Stop and check the breaker before deciding whether it is usable at all.
The documented code and its meaning
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F4 E4 | An F4 E4 (Low or No Line Voltage) Diagnostic code indicates that there may be a problem with your home power supply, keeping the dryer's heater from turning on. Touch any pad to clear the code from the display and return to the estimated |
What you actually observe
- The control lights up but nothing heavy ever runs — The classic signature: the low-voltage side is fed and the load side is not.
- The fault appears only at certain times of day — Load-dependent voltage sag follows the household, not the appliance.
- The breaker has tripped, or one half of a two-pole breaker has — A half-tripped double breaker does not always look tripped.
- NEAR MISS — everything runs and one function is missing — A single missing function is a component fault, not a supply one.
Causes, most likely first on this dryer
- One leg of the supply lost at the breaker or the terminal block — Half a supply is the classic version of this fault: the panel lights, and the heavy load never runs.
- A slack or burnt terminal at the appliance connection — Heat at a slack terminal raises resistance, which makes more heat, which is why these faults always get worse.
- Voltage sagging under load on a shared or overloaded circuit — The reading is fine at rest and out of range the moment the heating load comes on.
- A supply frequency or waveform problem from a non-utility feed — Unusual on a utility supply, and the first thing to ask about wherever the feed comes from a generator or an inverter.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the breaker at the panel, including a double-pole breaker that has only half tripped — This is the whole fault surprisingly often, and it costs nothing to look.
- Ask whether other heavy loads on the circuit misbehave — A shared symptom moves the investigation out of the appliance and into the house wiring.
- Note whether the control lights up normally while the load will not run — A lit panel with no heat is the signature of a lost supply leg.
- Have the supply checked before any appliance part is bought — A new board will not fix a supply problem, and that is where this money is usually wasted.
What an owner can safely check
- Switch the breaker fully off and firmly back on — A breaker that tripped part-way does not always look tripped, and a full reset is the test.
About 3 min
- Check whether anything else on the same circuit has also stopped — A second dead outlet moves the problem out of the appliance entirely.
Tools: a lamp or a phone chargerAbout 10 min
- Stop at the appliance terminal block — The connection behind that cover carries the full supply; it is an electrician job, not an owner check.
Before anything is opened
Safety
Before any panel comes off, unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Whether it heats by element or by burner, the dryer has a mains supply that has to come off first. The drum holds heat after a cycle in either case. The switches on the door are there to cut power at a particular moment. Leave their wiring as it was found.
When this stops being an owner job
A technician is the right next step once the breaker has been reset and the code is still present. Past there the work needs a meter or a panel removed, and the console or the front panel has to come away before the wiring is in view. A burning smell, scorching around the controls or a breaker tripping at start-up all change the answer to now, whatever else this page says.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F4 E4 the way the shared Maytag dryer code set defines it, which is the reading that holds across the model lines using that control platform. What it is not: a reading for an older control generation that shows the same characters for something else, and not a source for wiring colours, pin numbers, torque values or part numbers. Those differ family by family. A family or model page, where one exists, is the more specific answer and should be followed instead; the index linked below is where they are collected.
