The short answer
The reading E1 on this dryer names the documented service call. The documented wording sits in the table below; the ranking beneath it is what decides where to start. One power-down is the whole of the owner-side response, and then it is a call.
The documented code and its meaning

What you actually observe
- The display is otherwise normal and responsive — So the panel and its supply are not the question.
- A cycle stops at the same point every time — Repeatability is worth reporting precisely.
- The code stays on the display and the dryer will not continue — Which is the state the documented response is written for.
- NEAR MISS — the code cleared and has not come back — Then it was a transient and no visit is needed yet.
Causes, most likely first on this dryer
- A fault the manufacturer routes straight to a technician — The documentation for this code does not describe an owner-side remedy, and that is itself the information.
- A component behind a panel with no external test — Where nothing can be confirmed from outside the cabinet, there is no owner step left to take.
- A fault the control can detect but not localise from the front — The visit exists to narrow it down with the panels off.
- Occasionally a transient that one power-down clears — Worth exactly one attempt before the call goes in, and no more than one.
Check in this order, and why
- Power the unit down once and see whether the code returns — One attempt, properly done, is the whole of the owner-side diagnosis here.
- Copy the code exactly as the display shows it — Getting the characters right decides which parts travel on the van.
- Note what was running when the code appeared — Cycle, setting and how far it got are the three useful facts.
- Locate the model and serial plate before calling — Having the rating plate to hand is the difference between one visit and two.
What an owner can safely check
- Take the breaker off for a minute, then restore it — This is the only owner-side attempt the documentation supports for this code.
About 3 min
- Copy the code exactly as displayed, character for character — Similar-looking codes mean different parts.
Tools: pen and paperAbout 3 min
- Photograph the model and serial plate — It is usually on the door frame, behind the toe kick or inside the door.

Safety
Before any panel comes off, unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Electric models sit on a heavy two-pole circuit; gas models still carry their own mains supply. The drum stays hot after the cycle ends. Leave the interlocking switches wired as they came. They exist to remove power at the moment it has to go.
When this stops being an owner job
This becomes a service call as soon as one power-down has failed to clear it — that is what this code is for. From there on it is a meter on a de-energised circuit, and nothing in the control area is visible until the console is released. Call sooner than that if you smell burning, see scorching around the control area, or the appliance trips the breaker when it starts — any one of those is a stop-now signal rather than a wait-and-see one.

What this page does not cover
What is written here about E1 comes from the code set shared across Maytag dryer model lines on one control platform. It does not extend to earlier control generations that happen to display the same characters for a different condition. Wiring colours, pin assignments, torque values and part numbers are all left out on purpose: they are family-specific and belong on the page for that family. Where such a page exists, it is the more specific answer and takes precedence over this one; the linked index is where to find it.
