Maytag Dishwasher Drain Pump Replacement Guide
A Maytag dishwasher left with standing water after a cycle, grinding through its drain phase, or throwing an F8 E2 code usually needs a new drain pump (part WPW10348269) — a quarter-turn bayonet part you can swap from below without pulling the machine out.
Maytag routes all its drain water through a stainless chopper blade before it reaches the pump, part of the Dual Power Filtration system. That grinds food fine and spares the pump, but it also creates a dependency: once the chopper dulls, bigger debris reaches the impeller and wears it out.
Signs the Pump Is Failing#
- Standing water in the tub after a finished cycle — the pump runs but a cracked or eroded impeller cannot generate suction
- Loud grinding or rattling during the drain phase — debris caught between impeller and housing, or a failing pump bearing
- An E2 F2 or F8 E2 code — the board timed out waiting for the water level to drop during drain
- Draining that works sometimes and fails others — debris lodging on and off in the check valve or impeller
- Water backing up into the sink — usually a drain-hose or air-gap issue rather than the pump itself
Before you order a pump, rule out the cheap causes: check the drain hose for kinks and make sure the garbage-disposal knockout plug was removed, a classic new-install oversight. And inspect the chopper blade — if it is worn, replace it alongside the pump so the new impeller does not meet the same debris.

Pump vs. Hose vs. Air Gap#
Not every drainage problem is the pump. A kinked hose, an un-knocked-out disposal plug, or a clogged countertop air gap all mimic pump failure. There is a clean test: disconnect the drain hose at the pump outlet and run a short cycle. Strong flow from the pump but nothing reaching the sink means the blockage is downstream in the hose, air gap, or disposal. Weak or no flow from the pump means the pump itself has failed.
Replacing the Pump#
- Cut power at the breaker and shut off the water supply under the sink.
- Remove the lower kickplate — two quarter-inch hex screws at the bottom front.
- Put towels under the pump; residual water will come out.
- Release the spring clamp and pull the drain hose off the pump outlet — expect a cup or two of water.
- Unplug the two-wire electrical connector.
- Rotate the pump body about a quarter turn counterclockwise to release the bayonet mount, then pull it straight down.
- Inspect the sump opening for debris, cracked seals, and chopper damage, and clean the sump inlet thoroughly — anything left behind will chew up the new impeller immediately.
- Seat the new pump and rotate clockwise until it locks with a firm stop.
- Reconnect the hose and connector, refit the kickplate, and restore power and water.
- Run a rinse-only cycle and watch the drain phase from below with a flashlight, checking for leaks.
Tools: a quarter-inch hex driver, channel-lock pliers for the spring clamps, towels, and a shallow pan.

Why Maytag Pumps Last#
The chopper blade earns its keep: by grinding waste before it reaches the impeller, it lets a Maytag drain pump run 10 to 14 years, against 8 to 10 on filter-only dishwashers where fibrous scraps like celery strings wrap the impeller shaft. That advantage evaporates if the chopper dulls, though — a rounded or chipped blade passes larger debris straight to a brand-new pump. So whenever you are in there for the pump, look hard at the chopper edge and plan to replace it too if it is worn, or you will be back before long.
One Normal Thing to Expect#
A little water sitting in the sump area after a cycle is normal and actually good — it keeps the pump seal from drying out. It is only water standing above the filter-basket level that signals a real problem, and even then the hose and air gap deserve a look before you condemn the pump.
