Heat and detergent come before hardware
On a Maytag dishwasher, poor cleaning usually comes down to two things before any part is suspected. First, the water: run the kitchen tap hot before starting, or the machine's first fill is the cold water standing in the pipe, and detergent needs heat to work. Second, the detergent itself - powder and tablets that have sat open in a damp cupboard lose much of their effect. After those come the filter, the spray arms and how the machine is loaded.
What you are seeing
- Food residue left on dishes after a full cycle.
- Only one rack comes out dirty.
- A gritty film on glasses and plates.
- Results got worse without anything obviously changing.
- Not this fault: Dishes left wet at the end is a drying question, not a cleaning one.
- Not this fault: Standing water in the tub is a drainage fault and a different page.
Most likely causes, in order
- Water not hot enough at the start of the cycle — Why ranked: First because detergent depends on heat, and running the sink tap first is free and immediate.
- Detergent that has absorbed moisture — Why ranked: Second because it explains results that got worse with nothing else changing, and it costs a box to test.
- Tub filter clogged, or the grinder area fouled on an older machine — Why ranked: Ranked here because it recirculates dirty water over the whole load, and which design you have decides what to clean.
- Spray arm blocked or unable to turn — Why ranked: It explains one rack being dirty while another is clean, which nothing above it does.
- Overloading or poor loading — Why ranked: Last as a cause but common as a contributor - nested items shield each other however healthy the machine is.
What to check, in order
- Run the kitchen tap until it is properly hot, then start a cycle. — Because: Rank one costs nothing and changes how well the detergent works.
- Open a fresh box or packet of detergent and run the same load. — Because: Rank two is proved in one cycle if the results improve.
- Look at the tub floor: a filter that twists out, or a fixed grille. — Because: It decides whether rank three means cleaning a filter or something else entirely.
- Spin each spray arm by hand and check the holes are clear. — Because: Rank four explains one rack being dirty and the other clean.

- Run the kitchen tap until it is properly hot, then start the cycle immediately. — N: 1 — Tools: None — Time: quick
- Open a fresh sealed pack of detergent and run the same load again for comparison. — N: 2 — Tools: Fresh detergent — Time: one cycle
- Twist out the filter if there is one, rinse it under a tap and refit it firmly. — N: 3 — Tools: Gloves — Time: moderate
- Spin each spray arm through a full turn by hand and clear any blocked holes with a cocktail stick. — N: 4 — Tools: Cocktail stick — Time: moderate
- Stop rule: Stop here. Removing a spray arm assembly, the wash pump or the heating circuit is service work.
Before you reach into the tub
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher breaker before reaching into the sump. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The water in a tub can still be hot at the end of a cycle. Broken glass in the sump is common; use gloves and a torch. Do not mix dishwasher detergent with other cleaning products in the tub.
When this becomes a service call
Dishes stay dirty with hot water, fresh detergent and a clean filter. One rack never washes with its arm confirmed clear. The machine never seems to heat the water during a cycle. A gritty film persists on every load regardless of detergent.
