The short answer
F61 is how this cooktop reports a problem in the user interface. The code table records the documented meaning, and the causes below it are ordered by how often each one is the answer. It remains safe to use as long as nothing starts or runs on its own.
The documented code and its meaning
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F61 | There may be a problem with the User Interface (Touch Control), the Power Control Module, the associated wiring, or the electrical supply. |
What you actually observe
- The display dims or brightens with no input — Worth reporting: it narrows the supply question on the interface side.
- One or more keys do nothing when pressed — Map which keys respond before anything else: that map is the diagnosis.
- The panel beeps continuously, or beeps with no key touched — A key the control thinks is held produces a tone nobody asked for.
- NEAR MISS — the whole panel is dark — That is a supply or a control question, not an interface one.
Causes, most likely first on this cooktop
- A key held down by dirt, a spill residue or a warped overlay — Duration is what the control measures, so anything keeping a key shut looks like a finger and not like dirt.
- A failed membrane or touch zone behind the glass — Touch panels age unevenly, which is why one dead zone is far more common than a panel that has stopped altogether.
- The ribbon cable or plug between the interface and the control — This is the connection most often disturbed during a previous repair, and it is the cheapest thing in the chain to put right.
- A fault on the interface board itself — Placed last because it is the part bought first and the part least often at fault.
Check in this order, and why
- Clean the panel thoroughly and dry it before anything else — Residue heads this family and costs nothing whatever to eliminate.
- Work through every key and note which answer — A map of which zones answer tells a technician whether the panel or the control is the suspect.
- Power down and back up, then repeat the key test — If the pattern of dead keys moves, the interface is not the fault; if it stays put, it is.
- Ask whether a spray cleaner has been used on the panel — Cleaner that has crept under an overlay shows up as exactly this, a day or two later.
What an owner can safely check
- Wipe the whole control surface damp and dry it fully — Water or weak soap on a cloth, nothing sprayed at the panel, and the edges dried where liquid pools.
Tools: soft cloth, mild detergentAbout 10 min
- Make sure nothing is resting on or against the panel — A pan handle, a towel or a phone left on the controls holds a key active and produces this code with no fault present.
About 2 min
- Drop the breaker for a minute, restore, and retest the keys — This separates a fault that is happening now from one the control merely remembers.

Safety
Power off before panels off. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On most installations there is no plug: the cooktop is wired in, and the breaker is the isolation point. Treat the glass as hot well after the display says the zones are off. Leave the door switch and the latch wiring exactly as the factory set them: they cut power where the design intends, and that is not a wire to move.
When this stops being an owner job
A technician is the right next step if the code returns after a careful clean and a full power-down. Everything past that point needs the panels off, and the top has to come out of the counter before any component below it is accessible. Three things override that timing: a burning smell, scorch marks near the controls, and a breaker that trips on start-up. Any of them means stop and call now.

What this page does not cover
Treat this as the family-agnostic reading of F61 for Maytag cooktop models on the common control platform. What it is not: a reading for an older control generation that shows the same characters for something else, and not a source for wiring colours, pin numbers, torque values or part numbers. Those differ family by family. A family or model page, where one exists, is the more specific answer and should be followed instead; the index linked below is where they are collected.
