LG Washer Not Heating Water — Troubleshooting Guide
Most LG front-load washers do NOT have a built-in water heater — they rely on your home's hot water supply for warm/hot cycles. However, select WM models (WM4000HWA, WM4500HBA, WashTower units, and models with Steam or Allergiene features) DO have an internal heating element. Understanding which system your model uses is the first step in diagnosing heating failure.
This guide distinguishes between "no hot water from supply" issues and "internal heater failure" issues specific to LG's heating-equipped models.
Does Your LG Washer Have an Internal Heater?
Models WITH internal heater:
- WM4000 series (with Steam feature)
- WM4500 series
- WM8100/WM9000 series
- WashTower (WM4200HWA)
- Any model with Allergiene or TurboWash Steam cycle buttons
Models WITHOUT internal heater (rely on hot supply only):
- WM2500 series
- WM3400 series
- WM3600 series
- Most WT-series top-loaders (except select TurboWash models)
If your model has no internal heater and water is not warm, the issue is either the hot water supply or the inlet valve hot-side solenoid — not the washer's heating system.

Diagnosing Internal Heater Failure
For models with an internal heater (Steam/Allergiene-equipped):
LG Error Codes
- tE — thermistor (temperature sensor) failure. The board cannot read water temperature.
- HE — heater circuit failure (rare code, some models only).
- No code but water stays cold on Steam/Allergiene — heater element open-circuit or relay failure.
Most Common Causes
1. Thermistor (NTC Sensor) Failure (35% of cases)
The thermistor is a temperature-dependent resistor that tells the control board the current water temperature. If it fails, the board cannot determine if heating is needed — so it does not activate the heater as a safety measure.
Diagnosis: Access the thermistor (typically mounted in the outer tub sump area). Measure resistance: approximately 10K ohms at 77°F room temperature. Significantly different readings (open circuit or near-zero) indicate failure.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $10–$30 Professional Repair Cost: $100–$200
2. Heating Element Open Circuit (30% of cases)
The heater element (tubular resistive element at the bottom of the outer tub) can burn through over time, breaking the circuit. When open, no current flows and no heat is produced.
Diagnosis: Disconnect power. Access heater terminals (from underneath or rear). Measure resistance across terminals: should read 15-25 ohms. Infinite (OL) = element burned through.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate-Hard Parts Cost: $40–$80 Professional Repair Cost: $150–$300
3. Control Board Heater Relay (20% of cases)
The relay that switches power to the heater element can fail open (contacts burned). The element is fine, the thermistor is fine, but no power reaches the heater.
Diagnosis: Check for 120V at heater terminals during a Steam or Allergiene cycle. No voltage = board relay failure.
Parts Cost: $150–$350 (board replacement) Professional Repair Cost: $300–$550
4. Hot Water Supply Issue (15% of cases)
For non-heater models, or during cycles that rely on supply-hot water:
- Verify hot supply valve is fully open
- Check inlet screen for mineral blockage
- Confirm hot water reaches other fixtures
- Test inlet valve hot solenoid (should click when energized)
LG's ColdWash vs Heating Cycles
LG actively discourages hot water use for most laundry through ColdWash technology. The Direct Drive's 6Motion patterns provide mechanical cleaning that compensates for cold water. Only specific use cases require heated water:
- Allergiene (140°F+) — sanitization for baby items, allergy sufferers
- Steam — wrinkle reduction and odor removal
- Tub Clean — uses hot water for internal cleaning
If clothes are not getting clean on regular cycles, the issue may not be temperature — check the TurboWash spray nozzles for hard water clogging, or verify you are using HE detergent at proper concentration.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Sacramento Hot Water Considerations
Sacramento homes with tank water heaters set below 120°F (energy-saving mode) may not provide water hot enough for the washer to detect as "hot." LG washers expect at least 120°F from the hot supply. In summer months, cold water from the tap in Sacramento can reach 75-80°F, further reducing the temperature differential between hot and cold settings.

Prevention Tips
- Descale the internal heater annually — run Tub Clean with a washing machine cleaner. Sacramento hard water deposits on the heater element, reducing efficiency before causing failure.
- Verify water heater temperature — set to 120°F minimum for LG washer hot cycles to work properly.
- Clean inlet screens — blocked screens reduce hot water flow rate, causing the washer to time out on fill.

FAQ
Q: Why does my LG washer say Steam but clothes come out cold?
LG Steam cycles inject steam for wrinkle/odor treatment — this is not the same as washing in hot water. The steam burst is brief and targeted. If you need hot water throughout the wash cycle, select Allergiene or set temperature to Hot manually.
Q: Can I connect my LG washer to hot water only?
LG does not recommend connecting both supply hoses to hot. The cold inlet is used for rinse cycles (cold rinse saves energy and reduces wrinkles). Connecting both to hot wastes energy during rinse and may affect ColdWash cycles.
Q: Is it worth repairing the heater element on my LG washer?
If you use Steam or Allergiene cycles regularly, yes — the repair ($150-300 professionally) is far less than replacement. If you only use Normal/ColdWash cycles, the heater is not essential for daily laundry and you may choose to defer the repair.
