LG Washer Motor Replacement — Inverter Direct Drive and the $15 Hall Sensor
LG's Inverter Direct Drive motor is the defining technology of LG washers — no belt, no gearbox, no coupling. The motor mounts directly on the rear of the drum shaft. This eliminates the most common failure points on conventional washers (belt snapping, coupling breaking, transmission failing). But when the Direct Drive system does have a problem, the hall sensor is almost always the culprit, not the motor itself.
The Hall Sensor — $15 Before $400
The hall sensor is a small 3-wire component mounted on the stator (the stationary part of the motor). It reports rotor position to the inverter board so the board can synchronize the drive frequency. When the hall sensor fails, the board cannot track the rotor and throws UE (Unbalanced Error) or LE (Locked Motor Error) codes.
The hall sensor costs $10-$20 and takes 30 minutes to replace. The motor assembly costs $150-$400. Always test the hall sensor before ordering a motor.
Testing the hall sensor: Disconnect the 3-wire connector. Measure resistance between each pair of the three wires. All three readings should be similar (typically 5K-10K ohms). If one pair reads significantly different, the sensor has failed.

Actual Motor Failure Symptoms
- Grinding or scraping from the rear of the washer — bearing failure in the drum or motor bearing
- Burning smell from behind the washer — stator windings shorted
- Motor does not rotate at all despite no mechanical obstruction — open stator winding
- Visible damage to the rotor magnets or stator coils when inspected

Motor Replacement Steps (Front-Load)
Disconnect power and water. Remove the rear panel (12+ Phillips screws). The rotor is the large metal ring on the back of the tub — visible immediately.
Remove the single 14mm center bolt from the rotor. Pull the rotor straight off the drum shaft (it may require gentle prying if corroded in place). Behind the rotor, the stator is mounted with 6 x 10mm bolts. Remove the bolts and disconnect the stator wire harness (including the hall sensor connector). Remove the stator.
Install the new stator, reconnect the harness, mount with the 6 bolts. Install the rotor and secure with the center bolt. Replace the rear panel.
Run the tCL calibration cycle (empty drum, Spin Speed + Soil Level buttons for 3 seconds, then Start).
Bearing Replacement — A Related Job
If the motor is being replaced due to grinding noise, the drum bearings may also need replacement. LG front-load washer drum bearings are pressed into the rear tub half and require a hydraulic bearing press to remove. This is a professional-level job that most homeowners should not attempt without the proper press tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG washer shows UE error on every spin cycle. Is the motor bad?
Almost certainly the hall sensor, not the motor. Test the sensor first ($10-$20). UE errors during spin are the classic hall sensor failure symptom. Also redistribute the load — genuinely unbalanced loads trigger UE without any part failure.
Is the LG washer motor really covered for 10 years?
Yes — 10 years parts warranty. Labor is 1 year only. If your motor fails in year 5, LG provides the motor free but you pay for installation.
Can I replace just the stator or just the rotor?
Yes — they are sold separately. If only the stator windings are damaged, you can replace just the stator. If the rotor magnets are cracked, replace just the rotor. The hall sensor on the stator is also independently replaceable.
LG washer UE or LE errors? Our technicians test the hall sensor first — saving you hundreds if it is the $15 sensor, not the $400 motor. Book a technician →
